Newest and 4th Whip

Post by Cracker »

This is the 4th whip I've made. The 3rd is a snake and STILL does not have a knot on it (they're still giving me fits) :) My son said he wanted a black and yellow whip, so I modeled it after one I saw on Bernie's site. It turned out well and is the best cracking whip I've made so far. It is 6'10" with a 24" fall. The core is three strands of para cord, two of which are shot loaded and has a 10" steel handle. 3 bellies, first is a 2 ft 6 plait, second is a 4.5' 8 plait and the overlay is 12 plait. I still can't do a checkerboard handle which I wanted on this whip, but I'll get there eventually. The only thing I wish I had done differently on it was move the decorative knot closer to the end of the steel handle (but I'm not about to undo it now that it's done :D

That looks pretty good, especially for only being only your 4th. Nice work.
You know A wise old whipmaker once told me that the real secret to tying a good knot is to keep practicing.

Where are you getting your nylon para cord?

Looks nice - I really like that color combination. BullWhipBorton is totally right about the knots... I've untied and retied a knot on a whip LOTS of times because I wasn't happy with it the first time. I think my record is somewhere around 4 retie-ings on a single whip, maybe more.

For practice, I've tied turks heads on all kinds of non-whip things (fingers, pieces of wood, cigar tubes, etc). It's not as frustrating to screw up and have to start again if you're not actually tying the knot on a whip you've already spent hours working on.

Good luck, and keep posting pictures for us!

Thanks for the nice and encouraging comments and suggestions.
I get the black cord from here: http://www.georgia-outfitters.com/page65.shtml
The colored cord comes from a guy on Ebay that sells lots of different colors.

That looks really good Cracker, i've just started playing about with paracord myself..... :D

With leather i tie my turksheads free hand straight onto the job, but with paracord i struggle to do this with it being more slippy than leather so i use pins....

If your new to turksheads this is not a bad way to learn, i think everybody when they start out struggles it's just one of those things that falls into place one day......

Keep going your looking real good :D

Thanks Tony, that is a great idea. One of the biggest frustrations was the cord slipping together while I was trying to tie. I also ordered and received yesterday "Introduction to Turks-Head Knots" by Tom Hall. It is suppose to be one of the best books on Turks-Heads. I haven't done anything but glance through it yet, but it looks promising. How do you tighten the knot once you have it tied? Do you start at the standing end and work your way around to the finished end?

Ok cracker i'll have a go at explaining :) bare with me as i'm not sure what you can and can't do.....if i start with a basic knot and your more advanced i'll do it again....let me know

5x4 turks head....

form the basis of your not in the normal way even though it's a nylon whip i still do this with a couple of strips of leather...the first one about 3/4 of an inch wide pin that on and trim it, the next bit just a bit under 1/2 an inch again pin it on and trim it (this one goes on so the gap top to bottom is equal), then go over it to form a round/oval with artificial sinew.....give it a roll so it's nice and smooth.....

At the top of the whip and at the top of your knot foundation tap in 4 pins equally spaced...your in effect cutting the whip into quarters then go to the bottom of your knot foundation and tap in 4 pins the bottom pins go in looking down between the top pins so they are in effect offset...

now your ready to go......tie it really loose

take about 2 1/2 to 3 foot of paracord (de-cord) and thread it into the needle (the jumbo needles from tandy are best) hold the whip in front of you and trap the end of the para cord with your thumb next to a pin on the bottom row of pins...take the cord off to the left up and over the pin on the top row thats opposite and above your thumb....bring it down over the cord under your thumb and around the pin.....back off to the left and up it'll then go over the pin next to the one you went over first off.....bring it back down and before you take it round the pin next to the first pin you went round go under one then over one then around the pin......you just keep repeating this till you get to the beginning again.....as you go round you'll be creating more unders and overs but it's simple you just follow the string next to it and go opposite so if the string next to it goes over you go under and so on......

You'll get back to the beginning but you won't have enough coverage so just take it round the whole knot again....this is really simple it's just following the first round exactly.....when you get back to the beginning again take it round a third time in a different colour to create a little row of zig zags...this is generally known as an interwieve...

The interwieve....

back to the start of the knot to tie the string down go to the right of your standing end (thats the bit that war originally under your thumb) so it's

under two, over two....following the pair of strings on your left..

you'll now of reached the top end of your knot so push the needle off to the left and go under 4 and pull it through flip the whip in your hand so the thong is facing away from you....

your now coming back down the knot following the strings on your right go over two then off to your right under 4 again flip the whip so the thong is now facing you and your ready to go up......

these moves are the same all the way round until you come back to the start.......

now your knots finished but still a little loose remove the pins...trap your standing end so you don't pull it through accidently...i use a fid and gently slide it under the cord each section and pull it taught, you could just as easy use an oval nail or an awl whatever you have to hand....just follow the knot round and round till you've been round twice and tightened the first two rounds tight...then do the same with the interwieve....burn the ends of your string off and your done...

Hope that helps Cracker if not fire away with any questions....

Wow Tony, that is the best explanation I have read yet. Thanks so much for taking the time to post it. I took a couple of my whips to Arkansas for the holidays and both my brother and brother in law want one, so I'll be able to put your explanation to good use.
