Hello again old chum,
Remember that fall you were kind enough to reload my David Morgan with? Well, it's still there, but here's the question. This fall has stretched and stretched and stretched. It is so long now, that my whip cracks are having to be retimed essentially. I swear it is almost two and a half feet long now.
You know that I take exceptional care of my Morgan, but the question is, what should I do about this fall problem? Should I cut it down and add a new cracker, or should I just let it be?
Thanks my friend,
Mike
Hey Sergei, about that fall...

IndyFreedom you are back!!!! Sorry French, I am using MK's humor.
Yes, the fall and especially white hide falls tend to stretch out over time. And you are quite preseptive that this does call for occasional tuning if you notice your timing is a bit off. You do have a good sense of feel. It doesn't bother me much. If I remember right, the fall I put on your whip was about 28 inches initially. Over time with constant use and I think it has been 6 months it should have probably stretched out to about 2 extra inches by now. What I would do, if it bothers you and it seems that it does, I would cut about a 1/2 to 3/4" off at a time and retie the cracker. I would mark off the fall at the 28 inch mark, since that was the original length and you seemed to be happy there. So make sure while you are wacking the length to make sure you don't exceed the mark.
Does this make sense? Glad to see you are back in the saddle and posting here.

Also, eventually that stretch will cause the fall to lose the taper and become an even width all the way down it's length. The lack of taper will add to your difficulty in getting an easy crack since the energy traveling down the thong will cease it's acceleration when it reaches the end of the braid. When this happens the entire fall should be replaced. If Sergei is unavailable I'd be happy to do it for you. Good to hear from you, Michael!

That's a good nuance (geesh I used a French word - darn), ahem, distinction Mr. Edge. Yes, the taper totally getting so stretched out on the fall that the entire fall must be replaced. Very good point. Hmmmm... that might explain somethings on some of my whips.
Kyle, brings up a good point. The taper is not only important all the way through the plaited thong, but the fall is just as important in the total transfer of kinetic energy which is maximized by a slow gradual taper from handle to the thong, to the fall and to the cracker. I met some very serious whipcrackers at the WWAC this year, who are totally devoted to the science of tuning their falls and crackers to each of their whips. It's fascinating. That's why I like the hobby. You never seem to stop learning. Especially with new faces that enter in the picture that provide a whole different perspective.
Anyway, Mr. French, you probably would have never thought you would provide such stimulating discussion with your question. This topic is probably a must read for those that care...
