I think after the War, they really didn't care that much about 'style' yet, and were just trying to keep the rain and sun off their head.

In the 20's they were all obsessed with the impending superstardom of...

FLYING MONKEYS!

Image

Which explains their lack of preoccupation with finely styled hats.

Uh, do I detect someone with a Wizard of Oz obsession in the club tonight?

Definitely a Beatles fan though, eh? It might interest you to know I live right behind The Abbey Road Studios.

Definately a Beatles fan - mate, that's a very cool place to live!!

Back on topic, I found this picture of 'old' Indy from the YIJ series - did they just give him one of the young Indy (higher at the back et al) hats to wear in this scene?

Looks like the same brim shape?

You know, Fedora has been at this for a long, long time. I remember in the old days we used to have bitter arguments over hat specs and what the Indiana Jones hat “was” & “wasn’t”. By now he’s really an expert and can make each hat size in his sleep. But you know what? Some of us aren’t going to be able to emulate “the look” no matter what, because of our head and face shapes. Different hat styles are just better suited to certain people. I had a friend that had a great looking tall crowned fedora. It looked smashing on him. I tried it on and I don’t think that I’d ever seen a worse looking hat (on me). That’s life.

...and as you can see by Adam's new avatar, the reason is quite clear why the hat didn't look quite right. 8)

Is that hat higher at the back than the front?

Listen, you guys will get me hung.

I've started a Monkey trend here at the club, I'm so ashamed, me a mod and all...

Let's get back on topic before I end up under a Plymouth! [-o<

It wouldn’t be the first time I’ve been called an ape.

The avatar is my personal tribute to Dave Bartholomew and Elvis Costello. Back in the 50’s New Orleans man Dave Bartholomew wrote and performed a song called “The Monkey”. It was a whimsical song about how monkeys were disgusted at the very idea of such a foul creature as man being descended from them.

“No Monkey ever deserted his wife, starved her baby, and ruined her life. And you’ve never known a mother monk, to leave her babies with others to bunk. Or pass them on from one to another, til’ they scarcely knew who was their mother. And another thing you will never see, a monkey build a fence around a coconut tree. And let other coconuts go to waste, forbidding all other monkeys to come and taste. Why if I put a fence around this tree, starvation will force you to steal from me.”

And it goes on like that. My favorite line is “Man descended, the worthless bum, but brothers from us he did not come”. Dave recut the song forty years later with The Dirty Dozen Brass band. Anyway, a few years ago Elvis redid “The Monkey” and also wrote a continuation song called “Monkey To Man”. In it the monkeys are still disgusted with the present state of mankind. The image in my avatar is a still from the video of the song. The image itself is a parody of Elvis’ second album cover. Cheers

PS- The video for monkey to man was banned from MTV because of the girls in bikinis. What an idiotic society we live in.

ac, as promised, here are my "runner ups" in the search for my raiders hats:

this one is my wedding hj, size 59 (2 sizes too big)
http://i105.photobucket.com/albums/m212 ... v15002.jpg

here is my sab hj (size 57)
http://i105.photobucket.com/albums/m212 ... v15003.jpg

here is my todd's 'experiment' hat (size 58)
http://i105.photobucket.com/albums/m212 ... v15004.jpg

i must admit that these hats do photograph well. the wedding hj due to it's size can possibly hide it's taper but would require lots of work.

hope these photos help collect your thoughts sir.

One quarter inch difference, "give or take," between front and back. At least on my hats.

Kindly excuse the commentary from a long winded litigator, however, the pyrotechnics surrounding "the" chunk of wood was something to peruse. Almost, pedantically pugilistic.
Aeris_Canon wrote:* * * As for the technique. * * * Whether this was before or after you asked what could be done with your rabbit AB to look better I don't remember. But we discussed it. It's the video that you, Seuss, and even Pitfall have seen regarding the sides.* * *
Taking my comments for their intrinsic value, Canon's video was the most instructive piece I have seen. The technique involved in creating/fashioning the "sides" is subtle, but the result clearly noticeable, adding an additional "layer" to the hat's appearance.

Unfortunately, I did not save that video. For those who have, I would barter for a copy.

Sincerely,

Man Rundquist, it is great to see an old hand posting!! I still have your crown comparison pics somewhere, which really helped us out at that time. And as you can tell, I am still the cantakerous old man I always was. Hard to change a leopard's spots!!!!

You just made my day, posting in the Fedora section!!! And it made me remember what are now the old days, with you, _, Sergei, MK, and the rest of the guys of that era. Regards, Fedora

Thanks for the kind words Fedora. I never thought that I’d be one of those guys that started every phrase with, “Why, in my day we didn’t have……”, but here it’s happened.
