What's the best way to store bullwhips?
I have mine hanging from wooden pegs by their wristloops but most drag on the floor. Is it okay to hang them coiled? It would be neater looking.

This is my .02. If you know that you are not going to use them for awhile, then I would hang the whips off of their wrist loops on a wooden peg. I figure that the whip under long term storage shouldn't be coiled, but left in a relaxed state, nice and straight. Just make sure that they are in an environment where it is not totally dark and no varmits can get to them.Chamorro wrote:I have mine hanging from wooden pegs by their wristloops but most drag on the floor. But if you use your whips regularly, then leaving them coiled is quite all right.

That could do the trick if the hooks won't cause dents? I actually found a good place next to the stairway but I don't trust my cat to leave it alone.
One thing I have been planning is to make a narrow shelf up the wall, high enough to keep the whips safe from my dogs and my kid but it still doesn't solve the problem with the cat.
On the other hand, my whips are used at least once a week so keeping them coiled won't do much harm.

Just to clarify, Mark Allen's "Wall of Whips" Bill. Most of those whips are for his museum. In other words, he collects noteworthy whips and they are there for display. They are not there to be cracked. Most of those whips are several decades old.
All I am saying is that it is more ideal to store your whips all laid out, uncoilded. The next ideal would be to hang them "loosely" coiled. The worst would be to hang them very tightly coiled.
