Wested's "CRUNCH" leather ???

Post by Doug C »

I've searched this term and can not find anything on it.. but Wested is offering what they are calling "Crunch" Lambskin. What's the deal on it.. Also, I read somewhere that someone had a vegetable tanned Wested but couldn't find out any more info on it (it was Castor but he hasn't answered my PM yet  ). Anyway I'd love to have an Indy in Veg tanned leather and was wondering if it was actually the "Crunch"- Wested's site does a terrible job of explaining what it is. Anyone got any info on that?

The crunch is a rust coloured slightly waxy looking leather the surface wrinkles and sorta keeps the lines when you "crunch" it in your hand, it also have variances in colour tone across the leather.

This is pretty much what it looks like in bright sunlight.

The veg tanned is a bit light coloured right now, he's working on getting a darker, more authentic brown version no ETA yet.

Thanks KT, but.... to be clear,: 1) the "Crunch" is not a vegetable tanned leather - right? ... 2) the bottom picture that you posted IS the vegetable tanned but is a bit light colored and IS available now?

I thought the vegetable tanned leather was supposed to be a thicker Lambskin (more like the original movie jackets) but with lots of surface character [cracks, bubbling, jerky..etc). I got that idea from this thread viewtopic.php?t=22452

Though, Peter says in this thread that the veg. tanned leather he got was too small and inconsistant for manufacture. Don't think it was ever announced that he'd gotten any more. I'm looking for my next jacket to be of a very textured veg.tanned leather and was hoping that Wested may have what I've been waiting for. I have an Antiqued Lambskin from US Wings (I suspect it's veg tanned) that is the perfect leather IMHO but has a seem down the back and some overly baggy arm holes and sleeves among other small inaccuracies... or it would be my ideal jacket.

The crunch just seems to be a regular leather with some special treatment. Peter has not mentioned chrome or veg but I suspect it is chrome.

The second pic is the veg lamb. You can just see some of the variances in surface, what you can't see is how easily it is marked and the character that ensues. It is thicker than normal lamb.

They are still waiting on the darker version to come in.

I believe he still has some of the light veg lamb in stock but if you order it will be on the EXPRESS understanding that it is very variable in surface and tone, it is not your usual leather and may be a shock to those used to the matching you usually get.

You'll need to talk with Peter directly on this one, I suspect.

Best regards,

Kt.
