My new AB

Post by mobius »

I got my AB on e-bay from a COW member, awesome hat. It fit almost perfectly a little tight, but I took it to my wifes uncle who is a hatmaker an he made it bigger and sprayed on some protective material if it would rain. And guess what, on my first walk I walked into pouring rain. I did not see any changes after the first outing.

I also did some weathering, I got my jar fill of egyptian sand and poured it over and rubbed it in the hat.

nice acquisition mobius....beats waiting a year to get an AB eh?

i can't help but mention that the hat has a noticeable taper to it. was that how she was when you purchased it or did that become more pronounced when your hatter increased the crown size?

It was not there before I took it to the hatter, it is more pronounced where the bow ties. He wanted to see if it would correct it self before he would try to fix it. It was supposed to be size 57 but it was slightly smaller that that.

Hi sorry for the broken link. Hi have a 50gb storage space that came with my internet connection. And it seems that the location address chances some numbers and therefore the link will break. I´m working on a more permanent fix.

Is it just me or does anyone else see a taper there?
Short of a re-block, what can be done?

I think that has to do with the depth of the top crease. Deep ones can cause a tapered look in even the straightest hats. Plus, the AB can look that way from certain angles, so I think you're seeing a double-whammy there.

Yeah, the top crease is in too deep, and has settled into that shape. I would punch out the hat so it is open crown, steam the top 1/3 of it, and punch it out on the sides, from the inside to get the hat more straight sided again, and let it dry open crown. Then dry crease it, working to make sure the top crease doesn't sink back down. Sometimes a tapered hat can be straightened out with some tweaking of the creases. I would bet you would see a vast improvement. Fedora
