Greetings from a newbie!!

Post by gi_canuck »

Hello, everyone!! Finally got my account activation email and decided to drop a line or two to you good sirs and ladies!! I've been lurking around this site for a while on and off for about a year or two, but finally decided to collect my own indy gear and joined the site to make it official!! Yes, sir, GI Canuck is here to stay!!

I've ordered my first Indy Fedora, shirts, and misc. from Todd's Costumes' HJ with Cairo Bash and eagerly waiting for its arrival which is about mid October. Won a US Wings Kangaroo Leather Indy Jacket from Ebay and the rest of the gears also from ebay. Wish I had more time to have more options, but for now, these will do fantastically. I'll have the photos up as soon as I get the items.

I guess as for my second batch of items to order, Adventurebilt hat from Steve is a must!! I don't care how long I have to wait, I HAVE TO HAVE THAT HAT!! haha.

Finally, I'd like to tell you all that I am really excited about joining your forum and being a part of an awesome group of people with the same passion!! Can't wait till I get some more gear and offer my help in anyway possible to make this forum even greater!! Thank you very much and have a great one!!

Thanks for the warm welcome, everyone!! Just picked up a nice khaki pants from Walmart (Not screen accurate, but it's comfy and it'll do for now till I order one from Magnoli ) and hiking boots from Mark's work world... It's in Indystyle... (Lookwise anyway...) I think I'll have a pair ordered from Magnoli for the shoes and shirts as well... can't beat that price considering it's a custom order.

Oh I've got a question for any Canadian COW members... How long does it usually take for any overseas or U.S. Items to get here and how much does Canadian customs usually charge for customs fee for expensive items such as Jackets and Hats?

As for your question, Indiana G, I am in Kamloops, BC. Are you in BC as well?

Once again, thank you for everything, everyone!!

i'm from cowtown, alberta :D good to see another gearhead so close by though.

shipping from when the vendor ships out could be anywhere from 1 to 2 weeks.....unless you pay through the teeth for 2 to 3 day shipping.

as far as customs goes:

1. ab hat - nil
2. from todd's costumes - nil
3. from magnoli - shirt and pants cost me about $60-$70
4. from wested - jacket cost me about $80 (one time it was only $25 so go figure)
5. morgan whip was about $60
6. akubra fed from hatsdirect, au - nil
7. alden's from san francisco - about $40
8. anything from noel howard - nil

hope that helps. cheers!

Wow, thanks for the great info, Indiana G!! That was very helpful. Holy flying cow, you collected alot of stuff!! Hmm.. it sounds like they charge more customs fees for anything coming from Outisde of North America... Well, looks like AB Deluxe might fall into that category then... Anyway, If I ever get to the cowtown, I gotta buy you a pint!! That reminds me, have you had a chance to hit the Stampede in Indy gear? It would've been a great hit in my opinion. (or maybe not... some drunk cowboys might try to pick a fight with you, just so they can tell their friend "Hey, I fought Indiana Jones once... Yeah, I thought we were in a fist fight, but he shot me!!") haha!!

Cheers!!

P.S. Good to see another Canadian Gear Head myself!! We should get all the Canadian Gear heads together and have a meeting or something... Now we just need a bar or a pub called the RAVEN... haha...

my days of stampeding are long gone my friend :D i wear my gear daily.....of course, not the gun belt or mk vii (sometimes though....when i need some cargo capacity)....

i don't think alot of people pay me any attention as most don't remember indiana jones.....i figure i'm gonna get alot of snickering next may when indy re-establishes himself in the pop culture.

i think a western canadian summit would be great.....crazy legs murphy and snakewhip sable are both here in cowtown.....i don't know if you should meet sable without his restraints on though.....

i think we've hatched a plan to rent out a theatre here next may for the big show.....perhaps a good time for the summit??? :D

Welcome GI! As everybody says, "Come for the gear, stay for the people." How be things in Canadia? I grew up in Maine, right across the border from Grand Falls, NB; always loved the French culture up there...

Andy

First, welcome to a fellow Canuck. Great place GI and it sounds like you already got a good jump on your gear.

Thanks to Indiana G for this great info. My biggest problem came from US Wings actually. First they would not take any credit card but one from the US. This is the only company in the world I have dealt with (and I have done a lot of mail order stuff over the years) that would not take a credit card with a Canadian address. So I had to send a US money order which worked out fine but was a hassle. Then I requested, and they agreed to mail me my stuff but instead it got sent out UPS. This meant extra customs clearing charges which added $40 duty on a $50 jacket. OUCH. They actually split my order so the second part of the order they were kind enough to mail so I think the charge was like $18 or something. All in all a very expensive experience.

One note, the stuff they sent me was great quality and I am very pleased with that. Also beautifully packaged. I could not find that Roo jacket of yours on their website. Is it a discontinued item?

Hello there Canada Jones!! Sorry to hear about all that hassle from U.S. Wings. I guess I am going to be staying away from them, that's for sure. Thanks for the tip!!

Yes, the Roo jacket is discontinued unfortunately... I bought it off the ebay. I don't know if the previous owner is a COW member or not, but the size seemed to be right, so I took a chance and bought it. I hear Roo hide is one of the toughest leather out there per weight. I've been reading up on the site regarding this particular indy jacket. I think Petersen here used to own one and had a pic of it somewhere in the jacket section. According to him, it didn't distress well... Sounded like it was a black leather jacket with some kind of brown paint on top of it or something... When it got distressed it kind of gotten blotch. I don't really care though... It's my first indy jacket and well...although it won't look that good after a while, at least it's tough, so I can use it as a heavy duty work jacket... As for the look and screen accurate version, I think my next jacket will be either Wested or Todd's.

Welcome, gi_canuck! Good luck on your gear quests! Keep in mind, though, that this is the fedora section, so feel free to discuss the jacket more openly in the jacket section. You'll find plenty of discussion about US Wings over there.

I have a Wested which I love but I am sure your jacket will serve you well. Something else that will serve you well (segway back to fedora topic with a nod to the mods...) is the Adventurebuilt hat from Steve. Beautiful hat and a great guy. I would suggest ordering right away because his price will be going up plus there is a wait time to get it. Well worth it though.

Sorry about that binkmeisterRick... I think the topic got kind of veered off due to some questions regarding the jacket. I'll keep that in mind. Thank you very much!!
