stunt bullwhip

Post by ztmario »

I just thought of this. I know that swinging on a bullwhip will destroy it.. and that the ones they used in the movies for swinging had steel cable in them. I was wondering, why not just braid an indy style whip around a steel cable then? they make it plenty thin and strong enough to hold a person, and you can still braid two bellies over it easy. I'm sure it wouldn't crack, but it should still wrap around stuff, and then you could swing to your hearts content. am I nuts or would this work?

That's what they did.

well yeah.. but I'm sure they also bolted it to whatever he swung from. and who knows what that thing looked like up close. I'm asking if it would still wrap, and if you could do it and have it look the same up close.

i read a post that someone did braide around steel cable and it was quite a heavy whip. it sounded like it was quite a dangerous whip to play around with because of its weight.

if you wrap it and swing on it, you're still stretching the plaiting which is bad regardless of whats in the core belly.....am i wrong? if i am, then this would definitely only be the first time....yup.....mark it done....only wrong once!!!! :-

yeah, but you'd only be stretching it as far as the give between the plaited bellies and the steel cable.. right? and if you had that cable secured to whatever you used as the base of your handle, there shouldn't be much give at all.

But the outer plaiting will still be bearing the brunt of the friction which is still likely to tear it all to heck. And there is bound to be a significant amount of give between the plaiting and the cable given the difference in elasticity between the leather and the steel... in extreme circumstances you could probably rip the core right out of the thong. Remember, the stunt whips were actually anchored by the steel cable ... the plaiting (if there was any) didn't actually bear any of the weight.

I remember that this whip was made by Adam Winrich, that had a full length steel cable core.

If you had a whip with a cable in it, that'd be one mean weapon should someone get cracked with it. Imagine hitting the back of your own head with a leather wrapped cable....ouch.

Lately I've been thinking that I'd like to try to build a whip that a person could swing from.

Making a whip that is strong enough to hold a person's weight without stretching is only half the problem. The other problem is making a whip that will consistently, solidly wrap around whatever is to be swung from. Also, the end of the whip that does the wrapping/grabbing must be strong enough to hold a person's weight. I wouldn't want to swing from something as thin as an Australian-style fall.

Not only must the whip hold the person's weight, it must hold up to the forces the person will exert on the whip when swinging, which will be greater than the person's weight. So, I bet the thin Australian fall might be strong enough to hold my static weight, but it wouldn't hold up to being swung on.

So far I was thinking a wide, thin leather fall soaked in water with a small weight on the end might be a start for a swinging whip fall. The wide fall would give more friction, and the water would give the density to provide a tighter wrap.

yes or the back of your leg or any other part of your body that gets in the way of it...

that whip is a beast but i wouldn't give it up  . however if i was going to do it over again i would more then likely get it at 10 feet instead of 12 feet. this is mostly has to do with the weight and how slow the whip is.

actually just noticed the old pics in that post were gone and sadly i don't have the construction pictures Adam sent me before (formatted drive and forgot they were in my email d'oh!). here is one of the pics i kept comparing the size of the 2 whips. the dark red is the 12 foot steel cable whip, the brown is the regular 10 foot whip. the fall on the 12 footer is also MUCH heavier and wider.

actually Adam I'm interested to know if anyone else has had one of these whips made?
