How will Horse Hide wear?

Post by CM »

I know that HH is very strong - but what about the thin, sofer version that Wested use? I hear from some that HH tends to crack and tear with age. Is this true? And how would Wested's fashion HH fair over 5 years or more?

It should only crack and tear if it doesn't have the proper treatment, so I guess if you pecard it regularly, it should last you quite some time ;)

Btw, this old thread I started a while ago might be of some help viewtopic.php?t=20421

The hide Wested uses seems to be very resistant to wear. I have worn mine spring and fall (and some in the winter) for the last 3 years and I have very little wear. The storm flap has some wear from seatbelt rubbing, and I have some scuffs on the shoulder seams and at the end of the cuffs on the sleeves but thats about it. The lighter color of the hide shows through in these places. But the consistency in the finish is still strong over the whole of the jacket. Overall the hide has broken in very well and lots of creases and grain have appeared, with the new shine look completely gone. I'd say you could wear out a few linings before this thing would start to look bad. The hide is quite tough.

How are your underarms? That's where mine seemed to wear the most.

Underarms look spankin' new...no wear at all. I saw your pictures in the for sale ad....seemed odd to me.
