Movie whip action

Post by Paul_Stenhouse »

All,

I seem to recall a thread years ago that was along the lines of being able to make recommendations to movie-making folk about what we'd like to see done in a movie with whips.

With the new movie coming up, does anyone have any ideas as to what they'd expect/like to see?

Personally, I'd like to see Harrison use his whip to do something odd, but funny. For example, use it to cut a sandwich in half (on the diagonal, no less).

Seriously, though, it would be cool to see him dip it in some handy oil, light it, and keep that baddies away.

Regards,

Paul

Yeah, I did have an idea.

I think in one of those old swashbuckling movies, Errol Flynn was in a sword fight in a room with lots of candles. As the fight went on, Errol kept cutting down one set of candles after another, and the room kept getting darker and darker.

I thought it'd be cool to have a fight scene like that with a whip, where Indy keeps putting out the candles as the fight goes on. It might be more realistic to wrap a candelabra, and just have the thing go out as it falls to the floor.

However, swinging from a whip seems to be the old stand-by trick, so we might end up seeing that again.

i'd like to see him wrap something like a coatrack thats behind the baddie and send it crashing into him when he yanks the whip back.....i think thats still within reach for a senior indy. the fire whip is a cool idea though....love to see that as well.

If there's a railroad spike in the handle, how funny would it be to see him konk someone with it? I don't think anyone would see that coming, though most folks are probably unaware of how hard a whip handle is, so they probably wouldn't buy it... Oh, well... I'll just go over to my PBJ sandwhich now...

That's a good point, Rick. Have him knock someone with the handle. Hadn't thought of that.

It would be gross, but how about putting someone's eye out? Definitely a real possibility, as many know. Sergei sure knows!

So far I’ve heard very good things about the whip work in this move, which I am really hoping turn out as good on screen in the finished film.

Paul, I’d really like to see a fire whip show up too, or even have him use two bullwhips at once at some point or get into a whip fight with another whipcracker. I’m guessing we’ll see some classic whip cracking and disarming opponents. I’m also hoping they show the cutting properties of the whip and utilize some good wrapping, maybe even knocking and pulling people to the ground at some point. I also keep having this feeling that we may finally get to see that whip/sword fight that was originally planned for Raiders of the lost Ark.

I think he should get captured, and the villains take his stuff and they're like, "Oh, lemme try it - pass that whip." And they take their OWN eyes out. THAT would be awesome.

How about a wrap/dragging behind a moving vehicle?

Paul, I can’t really disclose too much of the whip action in the new film yet. I’ve been asked not too and gave my word that I wouldn’t, Sorry but I hope you understand.

As far as what I can tell you, This has already been made public its ok for me to post but for anyone who doesn’t want to know, now would be a good time to stop reading.....There is a sword vs. whip scene where Indy disarms the swordsmen.I know its not much to go on, but hopefully its better then nothing.

Hi Dan,

Fair enough. Very clever putting the font really really small. I couldn't make out what that was until I got really close.

No worries, I'll see it in 2008. Can you tell how you became privy to what's in store?

Hi Dan,

Yeah, I can see where one wouldn't be too chuffed about working on a major blockbuster movie that many people would have waited for over a decade now!

Nice try, mister!

Regards,

Paul.

What about using the whip to slice off a trigger finger. Or, is that over the top?

can a whip actually break bones? how?>

Easy, the velocity of the lash traveling faster than the speed of sound. Anything moving at over 700 mph will break whatever it strikes.

Only if the object isn't sturdy enough or the object which hits the other object isn't big enough. Like if a whip hits a concrete wall at the point of crack the wall won't collapse. But if a Concorde hits the same wall at the point of the sonic boom the wall will collapse.

Exactly. Thanks for the clarification.
