Wested goat: any goat?
Just wondering if anyone knows why Wested is having trouble sourcing goat hide. Is this hide getting harder to get these day? And why is it that other makers can obtain it? I have a Wested goat from a few years back and the leather is the best leather I've had any jacket made of. How can you go past the softness of lamb with the durability of iron?

I believe it's been the problem that his source has been an Italian tannery, and they have not been able to get the larger sized hides that are requred to make the Indy style jackets.
I'm sure he could obtain the goatskin from other sources, but that would probably require him to raise the price of the goatskin jackets....something he does not like to do if he doesn't have to. It's easier to drop the line than to source more expensive materials.

There are quite a few threads comparing Wested's HH to lamb already just on the front pageCanada Jones wrote:Did you go with the Raiders jacket or LC?Kt Templar wrote:The horsehide makes VERY nice alternative. I've just got one. .
The Horsehide looks great. Do you have a Wested Lamb and if so how does it compare?
thanks

In summary though, HH is darker than auth brown, but lighter than dark brown. It is not as silky/buttery in feel, but it still feels soft.
Also, I believe that the jacket mentioned above is a Raiders just because of the lack of press studs.

thanks Castor. I was considering a more durable jacket than the lambskin. I went hiking with the lambskin once and found it not very good for that so I am considering a horsehide. Is the Wested Leather the favored horse hide leather jacket these days?Castor Dioscuri wrote:There are quite a few threads comparing Wested's HH to lamb already just on the front pageCanada Jones wrote:Did you go with the Raiders jacket or LC?Kt Templar wrote:The horsehide makes VERY nice alternative. Anytime! While I can't speak definitively or authoritatively on how Wested's HH compares to the other candidates', from what I read, it seems that Wested's HH is a bargain at only 10 pounds extra. Judging from the other posts, one would be led to believe that the HH is also softer and much more luxurious than the other offerings, which seem much stiffer in comparison.
Speaking of my own HH, I should add that though the jacket is soft enough to avoid that bulky feeling, it still is rugged enough that I would feel plenty comfortable taking it for a hike.

I have 2 lambskins, the horse is definately thicker/heavier/less supple. It has the feel of a 'real' leather jacket against the light wear everywhere lamb.Canada Jones wrote:Did you go with the Raiders jacket or LC?Kt Templar wrote:The horsehide makes VERY nice alternative. I've just got one. .

(I'm trying not to be biased here! As I like both)
I love the lamb it's like a second skin you can chuck it on for anything. In comparison... ANYTHING feels a bit like plate armour. From the other jackets I have worn:
Goat: The horse seems a little lighter in weight and somewhat more flexible it has better drape.
Cow: The cow is heavier and does not flow that well, this is the most plate like!
Lamb: Butter soft, drapes and folds like the movie one, but it's not up to a lot of rough wear.
Of the current offerings, the horse allows a nice balance between toughness and drape. It is quite squeeky right now tho!
This HH is a raiders, I'll try to get some pics with it on. I was given it by Profwex. .
