Alright. The time has come to invest in a bullwhip. This is what I am working with...

Yeah, I fixed the knot on the fall. That's how it arrived to me. It's an 8', swivel-handled Mexican 4 plait POS. But it cracks.

I want a real whip. Of course, I'd love to go with a David Morgan. I have some cash saved up, but not that much. Plus, I'd feel guilty going straight from a Yugo to a Ferarri. I want to learn proper technique on a whip that can take a bit of abuse.

I like the Raiders style. I'm leaning towards 12 plait kangaroo, because I know it's more durable. I'm also 6'7". I've read a few posts that 10' suit taller people better than 8'.

Right now I'm considering whips by either Bernardo or Adam Winrich. Both offer whips for about the same rate, and both have high reputations here in the boards.

Please help me out! I'm turning my Halloween costume into something I'm proud to wear. Comments? Advice? Fire away!

I have a indy on a buget from adam. I know his does good work and a stand up guy. Bernardo's whips I myself have been looking at and would love to own one ( maybe in the future). Pagey has his website up and running again ( I hope he decided to make them again. I would look into him aswell.

All three would be a good choice.

Pschtyckque, I'd go with one of Bernardo's 12 plait kangaroo hide bullwhips, they are great whips, very well made and as close to a screen accurate David Morgan bullwhip as your going to get right now, his prices are also very reasonable. I'd still recommend an 8ft over a 10ft even if your tall, however; its your choice.

Adam Winrich makes great whips too, but he is only taking orders for the IOAB whips until further notice.

I went with a 9 footer the first time, a good inbetween choice if you're a tall person. (6'4")
A 10 footer would look good on your belt, though I also think an 8 footer might be easier to learn with.

A hard choice to make, though I didn't have any trouble learning basic cracks on a 9 footer myself.

Paul Nolan!! How could I miss his whips?! They are beautiful as well. I'll add his to my wish list.

Thanks for the comments guys. I know all 3 vendors are regulars here, and I'm not trying to pit one against another. I'm just looking for objective opinions on the products, so I can make an informed decision.

Please keep the advice coming!

I can only go by pics and comments by others here about bernardo and pagey ( and the fact that I want one from each of these guys). I have a IOAB whip from adam. He has done a good service to us all here. I have a Joe Strain that G-mann gave me a few weeks ago and I tell you it is fantastic. He should be near the top of anyone's list. I have a David morgan that I will be picking up from him ( in person) in acouple of weeks. I will take pics and post them with a review.

I learned on a 6 and 8 footer, and my first real whip was an IOAB. I still have one to this day, and plan to teach my girl how to crack with it, so if you want a good beginner's whip, it's a good choice to go with the IOAB. However, if you have a decent amount of cash to invest, I'd go with Bernardo or Paul Nolan, but make it an 8 footer to learn with. I had the good fortune of having Minnesota Jones and Dalexs teach me to crack on an 8 footer at the 2005 QM (thanks again, guys!), so it came naturally for me with the IOAB, and moving into a 10 footer was no problem.

Mr. Nolan is a first class whip maker; you would do well to have him make you an Indy bullwhip or any whip for that matter! You’re going to pay a bit more for his work, But it is well worth it.

Might as well throw Joe Strain’s name in the mix while where at it, he makes a pretty good Indy bullwhip too.

To add to what Dan said, I now own a 10', 12 plait Joe Strain roo I recently bought from ebay. It rolls and cracks easily, and it's a fantastic whip.

I went to Joe Strain's page, but I couldn't find a price for his Indy whip. There's a beautiful photo on the main whip page, but no details inside. Am I missing it?

The price is the same as the Lone Star whips, so $415 for an 8-footer and $500 for a 10.

Amen brother. I would love a whip from Bernardo, and Pagey is unfortunatly retired. Quick question, how is that IOAB? I've been looking at those for a while and think I might get one to scratch the whip itch as soon as I can get some funds. Even that is out o' reach right now till I get my lid. The appropriations committee (read:wife) shut down after approving my hat. :(

It's a lot of bang for the buck. I think Adam does the gearheads a great serrvice for providing a really good whip that looks close enough.That a person can own a whip with out the big advestment.

As for a whip from Bernardo, we're hoping to be able to participate in a family trip to Peru next year (my wife's mother is Peruvian). I'm hoping to be able to save up a bit and go and meet Bernardo personaly in Arequipa and get a whip from him then. :D
