looks good to me. your brim is doing a TOD thing instead of a raiders thing though....dimension wise, i think it suits you fine.

Actually, his brim is still Raiders correct. The hat wasn't turned throughout all of Raiders, so it's correct with or without the turn.

Thanks! Not sure really. I got it on ebay for about $100. It looks like a knock-off Morgan. About 13'. Shorter handle, but nice and heavy and LOUD.

I am loving all these new shots! Al, Harrison, Slowdevil...great pics. I liked 'em so much, I decided to snap a new one of my own! I decided to rock my now Cairo-styled AB with my "Temple of Doom" dinner jacket and bowtie!

My darn digital camera went on the fritz a couple of weekends ago. I have some older photos of my AB and a couple from different snowstorms.

head down shots to show off the top center bash always makes the hat seam larger than it should be.

Hey all I'm new hear so go easy on me!!!! making my first post!!!!

Sorry this was the most relatable thread i could find for my question but,
Does anybody know what month fedora is into with his hats?

I ordered in Feb, I asked him to tell me were I am in the list but haven't had a reply, I know he's been real busy recently and did'nt want to bother him again in email or on here!!!

Any answers would be appreciated, Sorry for stopping the train of thought on this thread, I guess I'll have to work on my COW etiquette. LOL

thanks Joe aka Red Dust

Welcome aboard, Red Dust! Honestly, the best thing to do is to take your mind off of it. Your hat WILL get to you, but since Fedora is a one-man operation with a LOT of hats to make, it can be difficult to pin down a date. Look at it this way, you order a Ferrari and you have to wait at least two years before it's ready. Your hat will get to you LONG before then! I have two hats I'm waiting for. One's a reblock, and the other is a new hat. I don't even remember when I ordered them, so there's no way for me to know how long my wait really is. But he is a man of his word and he will get you a beautiful hat in time. I know this several times over. In the meantime, sit back, pull up a chair, and enjoy sittin' with the rest of us under this shady porch.

I'm new here, too. I just ordered my hat a couple of weeks ago. The wait times are long, but from everything I've heard it's an amazing hat. In the meantime I've got my brand new wested to fawn over! I can't wait to post it on here.

all the talk of AB's from one of Bending Oaks previous posts has forced me to purchase my first AB. Well...not really forced but more like tipped my interest enough to venture out of what i would normaly purchase. I am looking forward to comparing my first AB to my other HJ's. I will be posting pics soon enough as well as some first impression thoughts on comparrisons and thoughts as time and the hat itself wears on. I will have to say though...it is gunna take quite a bit to convince me these hats are better suited to my taste then the HJ's, but until then i will keep an open mind.

ydam,

i'm happy that you are in line for an AB. i have 4 hj's myself, 3 todd's and 1 from SAB....you will find that AB's are surely better quality as they are made by hand, have superior felt, and are more raiders SA than any other offerings that you will find out there. the only thing hj has got going for itself is the herbert johnson name IMO. thats what the selling point was for me but i've evolved since then.....to perhaps buying an IMHJ in the future :D

Bought my beaver AB second-hand, but that doesn't diminish the sense of ownership, right?

Took it out for an inaugural trip to Washington, DC.

Well i just recieved my AB a few days ago and I have to say the hat looks nice. First impressions though I still think the HJ is my fedora of choice. I can definatly see and feel a difference in the 2 though. The AB won't be loosin its shape any time soon. It seems to be a very sturdy and well built lid. I wanted to get some of your opinions on the 2 hats as well. Before i go into much more details on my Pro's and Con's on the AB I wanted to post some pics and get some feedback from some of you. I will get a few pictures taken and post them after the long weekend.

Beautiful AB Deluxe, Fedoraguy!!!

The other hats look nice as well! (I've also got the ABD and a Fed deluxe myself).

Great hat collection, for sure!

To quote John Travolta in Pulp Fiction "That's a bold statement"
:P

Seriously though, I'd be curious to hear your impressions of the two and what it is about the HJ you like better. I'm certainly not arguing against your opinion on favoring the HJ. I've never owned one myself, though I do have a regular AB from Steve which is a decent enough hat (I've owned both the beaver and rabbit). Most folks go ga-ga over the regular AB, so it's not often you hear someone say they like another hat (HJ or otherwise) better than one of Steve's. I will say, as much as I like my reg. AB, my AB Deluxe from Marc is easily my favorite hat, and it's not even close.

Looking forward to your comparison and pics!

Please dont get me wrong...I do think my AB is a quality hat. Also, my first impressions have a tendency to change after some time to let the hat (or whatever the item may be) grow on me. In the end though it is just an opinion...and not one from a hatter or anyone that knows much of anything about hats. I am lookin forward, and nervous, about puttin in my own 2 cents on the 2 different fedoras, but also looking forward to seeing what others have to say about comparing the 2.

Nothing to get wrong, Ydam! You have an HJ and now you have an AB, and all things considered, you still prefer your trusty HJ. Nothing wrong with that.

My questions merely come from a standpoint of someone who is genuinely curious as to what it is about the HJ you like better than the AB. I'm not saying you're wrong, or that one hat is better than the other or anything else. In essence, I'm not asking you to defend your opinion, just asking you to share the reasons / feelings you have that helped you make that decision.

Like I said, most folks get one of Steve's hats and are thoroughly satisfied. Many consider their quest for an Indy fedora complete. So when someone pops up with a different opinion, it's just unusal, but certainly not wrong. Heck, I'm in the same boat to a degree, as I said, I like my AB, but, in my opinion, nothing compares with my AB Deluxe from Marc. To me, the regular AB and the AB Dlx. are two very different animals. They often get grouped together, but aside from the name printed on the sweatband, and the vintage HJ ribbon, they are completely different hats.

Anyways, I look forward to your pics and review!

And yes again, #### it, I still do find the HJ's appealling as well on certain aspects
I gotta tell ya. This last shipment of HJs that Magnoli had sent to me for the conversion were not unstable like the other ones that HJ sent. This felt here, with no stiffener is as close as you are gonna get to the original Raiders felt, plus this shipment was not afraid of steam!!! I have no explanation, but I hope they have "adjusted" something recently. I found out when I ironed one on the block. Instead of the heat shocking the felt and the hat losing 1/4 of an inch in crown height, it did not shrink with the first application of heat, unlike the first shipment I got from HJ. I actually had to work on getting the HJ to shrink to the 5 1/2 crown height I use for the Raiders fedora. That will be good news for folks getting their IMHJ this week and the next.

What the IMHJ and Todd's HJs have going for them is the really soft rabbit felt. It is very similiar to the original felt used in Raiders. I may have to buy one of these HJs for myself. I am serious. I just hope the next shipment from HJ is just like these. If so, I will change my views of the HJ felt, and let you guys know. I don't have to be careful with this current crop of HJs at all. I can treat them just like I used to treat my own rabbit felt. Fedora[/code]
