Here's a pic of the Smith and Wesson I picked up today.
It seems to have been negected but not abused as there's a bit of pitting but the bore is good and the action is tight.
I got the holster and belt adapter off e-bay. Any idea what the extension are for on the belt adapter/
Bob.

Someone had a simalar gun in the same serial number range
(mine's 431xxx) over at the S&W forum (I can't post there yet) and it looks like it's a pre model 10 M&P form the early 1920s.
Stamped right above the grip is " IACO SAC C. " The last part might be for Sacramento county but no clue about the rest.

the extension could be to clear body armour/bullet proof vests, or it could be a custom arrangement. think old-school tactical thigh rig. it could have been for a mounted officer, perhaps the extension made it easier to draw whilst on horseback??

That's what I was thinking, it's got US and 1951 stamped on it.
After I bought if for about $16 on ebay I found just the belt hanger selling at Cabelas for $5.99.

Those old M&P models were called long action Smiths, and consider VERY smooth.....smoother than the Model 10 upgrades.

You found a very nice revolver and shooter.
