Remedial Bullwhip Making Question

I have always wondered how whipmakers obtained the very long strips of leather necessary to make a whip. When I was a kid, I thought that whoever skinned the animal went around the animals torso, cutting and peeling the hide off in strips - kind of like an orange peel or the skin of a spiral cut ham.
Now, I guess that the one large separated hide is spiral cut from the outside in, or vice-versa? I have never seen or heard how this is done, so please excuse my ignorance.
Next, are all of the guys on the forum who make Indy-style whips learning THAT style from the same book or something? I have seen plenty of literature for making generic whips, and I've seen the video of how to make a 4 plait stockwhip, but I've never seen anything that tells one how to make a whip like Indy's.
At this point, I am short a bullwhip for Halloween (had to sell my last one). I'd like to try my hand at making one, and it wouldn't have to be even close to perfect for Halloween purposes. Any info is greatly appreciated.

In about a week or two I am going to be comming out with two diffrent DVD's on whip making one for leather whips and one for paracord, If you are interested let me know I am trying to see how much of an interest there is out there for this type of thing.

Yeah, that would be great, if it would instruct me on how to make an INDY whip. I would definitely want one. Let us know when they're available. Thanks.

Ron, depending on the length needed, the sets of lace are cut length wise and then curved down or continued around the piece of leather. I’ll see if I can find a diagram to post to explain it better, hopefully one of the others can chine in with a more detailed explanation in the mean time.

There was some information written up in the 2nd edition of David Morgan’s book Whips and Whip making on how the 450 series bullwhips are made. Some are leaning the details directly from David Morgan though, of from some one who leaned how to making them from David, or they are making the whips there own way and just making them look like the Indianan Jones style bullwhip on the outside.

The pages in Morgan's book Whips and Whipmaking seem very cryptic when you are making your first whip. Everytime I read the 2 1/2 pages on the 450 series whips after I have made a whip, it gets clearer.

If you get the Whips and Whipmaking book you really need to get his other book at the same time (Braiding Fine Leather).

I visted morgan the other day and he said that his book that will go into detail on how he makes the 450 series whip will be out next spring (hopefully).
