Raiders Fedora by Wolf's Hattery

I had my local Hatter build this lid for me. It is an 8x rabitt by Beaver Brand Hats. The hatter took some of the specs I gave to him and did a great job of replicating the same. Total wait time 4 weeks. Total Cost about $175.00 with tax. (I live in the same town so there was no shipping) Dave does not have e-mail, but will entertain making these for anyone who would like one. I do not have these details yet, but send me a PM and I will get contact info to you. The ribbon needs some SA work, but other than that, I am very pleased. When I received the call that it was ready, I went over planning on discussing the bash, etc, but he was already done! This did not bother me one bit either! Anyway, here you have it.

The photos are a little bit big, but you're within the 6 shot limit, so that's good.

That is a FINE looking hat, my friend! BRAVO!!!!

Wow, $175 is a steal for any kind of beaver, pure or blend alike!!

The number of pics is fine, but yes, please scale the size of them down to 640x480 pixels.

That's a nice looking hat, though! It looks good on you. It's all the better that your hatter is nearby! Keep in mind, though, that the Beaver Brand hats are beaver blends and not full, 100% beaver hats. The system of using XXXXX to notate beaver content used to mean something decades ago, but now it's a pretty useless indicator since every other hatter makes up their own definition of the "X" system. If it were a 100% beaver hat, I can guarantee you would've paid a LOT more than $175 for it! Still, I've owned several Beaver Brand hats and have been very pleased with them. They are fine hats and should last a long time. Well done!

It's the same source and beaver blend number/quality as a Keppler, by the way. His are either 8x or 10x now, but are Beaver Brand too.

For $175 bucks it's nice to have yet another alternative source for an Indy hat out there now.....especially one that you can have customized.

Thank you all. I have had many new hats over the years, but man does this one just feel great! Dave did a really fine job on this, in fact all the hats he makes are great. It is a real treat to live near such a craftsman. His shop is just a hole in the wall, but inside it is a haven (and heaven) for the hat Enthusiast. He can make any kind of western hat and has numerous fedoras and derby's as well. A large portion of his business is re-blocks and cleaning. 10years ago, our town had 10-12 western shops. Now we have less than 3. I sort of miss the days when everyone wore a felt hat. It seems that those days are gone too, just like Rendering Fisk has lamented. Sure would be great to see more of this golden era along with the good old social and family values. Ok, off my soap box. Thanks again for all the kind words.

That it is a great looking hat!

How much stiffener did he use? Could one get an Indy lid that was super stiff, like a cowboy hat? That way, once one got it styled just like he wanted it, he would not have to worry about it for a very long time.

Just curious.

It would be for more formal uses. Garrison duty, as we'd say in the Marines. Or perhaps for safety, like a helmet?

I called Beaver Brands once last year. All of there hats are rabbitt till you get to a 20X and it is 20% beaver and the rest is rabbitt.

Each X they go up they give the hat a better finish....

This is a response I received from Beaver today: We are happy to hear that you purchased a Beaver Brand hat. We are very proud of our 8X quality. As you may suspect and may already know, each hat manufacturer has its own rating system – the industry is not uniform. Our 8X has been compared to other company’s 20X, but without the price. Our 8X is 100% fur felt that is blend of hares and rabbit fur at our specified combination.

So I guess that says it all. And now- this is where the cowboy rides away.

Well, maybe the felt was blended by beavers, hence the name.

Captin Solo- To get a "Stiff" hat you must have it starched. I have never ahd this done, but I know some bronc riders who did this and I believe that a real "cheap" hat (mostly wool) will be starched in order to help hold it's shape or when being re-blocked. If anyone knows different, please chime in. Hope that helps.

Yeah, that sounds like a sweet set up. Whereabouts in the Selkirks are you - US or Canada? About how many months of the year does weather permit comfortable porch-sitting?

I live towards the south east part near the cities Spokane in WA state and Coeur d' Alene Idaho (30 miles from Spokane) I sit on the porch quite comfortable from March until November. Then it is Carhart or Wested time in front of a fire pit (not seen in the photos above) BTW, I love Houston, especially the Pasadena Area...Is Mickeys still open or did they shut her down again?

My wife and I live basically next door to Johnson Space Center, so we're pretty close to Pasadena. I have a cousin who lives over there. I need to call her....

) I can see from the backgrounds in the pics that hat will get real use.
Kuba was my favaorite then I tried the roam (straight out of a humidor, maybe that helped) the acid one and the jucy lucy. I love them all. I just wish you could get the juct in a churchill. Its only three inches long. Burns quick.
