ID and critique my hat!

Post by FordPerfect »

Finally managed to get some good pics of my lid -
Very interested as a newbie to get some feedback on size/proportion and accuracy - the guessing game worked nicely in my intro thread so I'm hoping this will follow suite. I know there are those amongst you who will know what it is straight off the bat, and initially I was concerned the brim was too wide/crown too high etc. but I admit to being elated by what I see here. Looks good to me (If a little over-weathered)
Tell me whatcha think...!

I'm no hat expert, but that's a #### fine looking Indy fedora. Really nice shape.
I'm just going to take a guess, and say it's a Keppler.

Is it just me, or does the brim look huge?

I'm going Akubra Fed Deluxe. It's a little more stove-pipe looking that most Reg. Feds I've seen. Great job though, man! I'd say your weathering is just fine. If you wanted, you could even do more. Brim is fine, width is fine. Looks good!

Federation, going by the ribbon. I think the crown height and brim width matches your face. Don't change a thing.

It's a pith helmet? Right? Guys, a pith helmet?

The ribbon is a practical giveaway for an Akubra, but it looks fantastic on you. The brim width and crown height suits you nicely, as well. Good job on the "dirt," too.

Well done to all who said Akubra Fed. - And bonus for guessing the bag strap!
Wanted some observtions as I was also concerned the brim was oversized - its amazing though, its a perspective thing - Photos in closeup seem to distort it and yet with some distance;

It all takes shape.
Thanks to all for your comments, I'm really settled after reading them :D

Actually I thought the brim is pretty narrow, my first thought was you cut it... Funny.

Cheers,

I think the hat looks great, different angles make the brim to totally different doesn't it? I like how you went the extra mile with the dusting, really gives it character. Looks far, far better than the fed I had. :)

Nice looking lid there!
Did you use Fullers Earth to dust it up? Very cool!

If you're thinking about altering the bow to make it a bit more accurate and you don't want to get a whole new ribbon it's fairly easy to do so. Here is a before and after pic of my Akubra. I tried to give it a ToD sort of look and not the "flying V" you see in the Raiders hat.

Nice shots!

Regards,
Swindiana

Hey dont blame me! I didn't even know what a fedora was a month ago!!!  If you were to ask me then, I would have said a fedora was a the distant cousin of an Asian muskrat  Plus, I was going with my favorite brand (even if I cant afford it  ) 8)

First off... GREAT looking hat.... it does suit you perfectly, and Fedora, you bring up an excellent point, and, as an expert in this game, can I interrupt a moment for a question... how does one KNOW which variation on the hat will suite one's particular headshape!? These hats always look ridiculous on me... WAY too big... and your comment got me thinking... maybe there IS a hat for me... is there any way to tell without buying them all and trying them out!?

Great gear, F.P....

Order from a custom hatter (Fedora, Optimo, etc), but in addition to the head shape and size, send them a mugshot and ask them to make a hat that would look good on you. :junior: -IJ
