I know it's been a terribly hard wait - same for me - but Steve and I wouldn't have welcomed JEEP aboard, if we wouldn't have 100% confidence in his craftmanship and pickyness. I KNOW the holsters that should be done (prototypes) will be second to none and I can hardly wait to inspect them personally. And I also know, that they'll be worth the wait. JEEP has been going over several THOUSAND screen shots, modifying the patterns again and again and worked close together with a member that I consider one of (if not the) most knowledgable gearheads around. He's been sourcing long time to find a leather that is IDENTICAL to the one you see on screen, same with the "little metal thing". Even though the waiting time has been killing me too, I know it was worth it. I appreciate this pickyness, that I expected from JEEP after meeting him in person. As with all AB products I'm fully convinced that it takes a fan to take such a project upon himself, as money can never pay off the time and energy involved (think four(!) months of research for making a holster!!!).
I believe that JEEP will be VERY busy, once you see what he's up to.
Regards,
Marc

I hope that was Lee Keppler. He's the ONLY individual I know of that has personally handled and spec'd out the original Raiders hero/screen used holster.Marc wrote:................and worked close together with a member that I consider one of (if not the) most knowledgable gearheads around. Working on it Erri
Pics of a prototype of the Raiders' holster should have been up this week - but I am not yet satisfied with the grooves on the flap, strap and egde of the holster - I need to get myself a better tool for making them. I am working hard figuring out which one would work best.
Regards.

Here's the first real update:
The freshly cut - and uncoloured - prototype for the AB Raiders holster.
There are still a few things I would like to change - and suggestions are still wery welcome
Later this evening I will colour it - and hopefully I will have it sewn and treated with leather dressing sometime tomorrow.
More updates will follow soon.
Regards.

Two prototype Raiders holsters in the dyeing process. The colour will be much lighter once dry. I am not sure I am compleatly satisfied with this colour - it looked quite diffrent on the sample at my supplier.
This leather is not responding wery well to the colour - especially not on the rough side. I will have to source some diffrent leather - quite irritating, as in all other aspects this leather is perfect.

Looks good so far, can't wait to see the final product what Oz. leather are you using ? Its hard to tell from the pics on my comp, but the color. does look a little dark. Looks like it might be a good shade for a gun belt. Sorry things are'nt working as you planned, We all sit and wait in anticipation.
Thanks e.m.t. - the leather is about 2-2,5 mm. thick.
Here's the first prototype Raiders holster.
The colour is way too dark - aparently the colour-sample I saw at my supplier had faded in the sun. How stupid is that?!!
There are stille some issues with the end-plug I need to resolve - but I am quite happy with the overall shape of the holster.
Pics of the second prototype is due tomorrow.
Regards.

For a prototype, I'm quite impressed Especially considering what my prototype hats looked like to start with (still got one of them, being my yard hat now...). The leather seems to have some characteristics, that I've only seen on screen shots, as for example the way it folds in the stitching area. And the accuracy of the groves are just to die for!!! - Wonder if it would be an idea to add the groves you've got on the "belt" to the back part where you put the gunbelt through... Granted, I've never seen an original holster, but I think it would add some continousity to the overal design.
Once the leather fades a little and the white thread gets a yellowish hint to it - which I'm sure will happen over time - it'll be pretty darn close IMHO. Are there any chances to distress the second prototype?
Thanks for the great update JEEP!

Marc

Jakob, I love the look of the finish, the marbelized color. I've gotten a similar look w/ soot and shoe polish, but obviously mine wears off over time. Any idea how well that finish will last?
You decided not to put the rectangular metal lanyard loop on the back, though? I admit, I've never actually hooked anything on that loop, but Minnesota Jones' screen-used TOD holster has one. (Marc, you can see the back of a screen-used TOD holster at: http://www.minnesotajones.com/gear_and_props.htm )
I haven't seen pics of the backs of any holsters from ROTLA or LC, though, so I don't know if that was an abberation. I know the back of MN Jones' does look a bit different than the webley repro holster I have (belt loop is pointier on mine), but my repro has a metal loop as well. Thoughts?
Thanks for the sneak peeks.

Original Webley holsters have a range of different fittings on the backs. Some have the metal buckle, some have a metal right-angle stud that goes through the belt and some simply have a leather loop...
I've found that mink oil is a good way to get the marbled look on a holster. Apply it unevenly and it goes darker in patches.

Grooves has been added to the beltstrap on the second prototype - it looks quite cool.
No distressing this time I'm afraid - I have a top man who will do that job for me
The marbelized finish is actually due to the leather not taking on the colour wery well - it should last quite well.
I can make the holster with a metal lanyard loop - but I have decided to make it a custom option rather than making it standard.
Regards.

Jeep that second prototype looks great, Yes I agree the color is still a little dark but it likes it took to the leather a little better. I still think that color would be great for a belt I know you know but the plug dosn't look quite right, it looks squashed for some reason. Not the pic of the plug itself but the pic of the whole holster near bottom. I can tell you are close, I'm sure you will figure it out. The shape..... you nailed it better than anyone else IMO, I always felt the holsters we all are used to are well made, but never had the shape or the angle of flap just right. Once you fix plug problem, and and find the right color this thing is gonna scream ROTLA

If you are just looking for a 'holster filler', not necessarily a real piece, check out the other threads here in Guns & Holsters, there are replicas that pop up here and there. Search on 'artsee1 replica' for an example of a recent one.Castor Dioscuri wrote:Hmm, I wonder if most six-shooters will fit into this thing? Actually I'm intending to use a holster for what it was intended for; storing a real firearm, since replicas can't do much on the range, or on hikes
Nice work on the holster Jeep! Though I wonder if now is a good time to ask if it will come in different colors?

Castor: It will
As soon as I find the right SA colour I will have my supplier source me some high quality leather in that colour - but on top of that I will keep a stock of undyed leather and different dyes for custom orders. Custom colouring will probably cost a small extra fee (due to the extra time involved in the process).
I would much rather dye all my leather by hand myself - but if I had to do it to all the holsters the price would go up through the roof.
This holster is BTW not meant for a Webley but for a S&W N frame with a 4" barrel (like the HE 2).
I will most likely start making LC style Webley holsters at some point - but first I want to finish developping the Raiders holster.
These holsters are meant for real life use - nothing would make me more happy than a customer who actually used the holster for it's actual purpose
Ripper: The end-plug is out of shape and it is out of place. It is quite easy to solve - but it will require some tinkering and testing.
Regards.

Something I noticed on my Todd's bugdet holster is that the second button hole on the closing strap doesn't actually reach the button. It's purely decorative. I know that Lee Keppler's Raiders holster was initially designed to accommodate the HE 2 as well as something a frame size smaller like the S&W Victory. The second button hole was intended to hold the Victory more snug in the holster. Does your button strap actually reach the brass button, or is it pure decoration, too? It'd be nice to have a Raiders style offering which was 100% functional in this regard, especially if you're designing it to be a true holster.
