WHERE IS THE Raiders Fedora??

Post by HANSOLOJONES »

Hi Guys.

I am refering to the actual hat Ford wore in Raiders. The real hat. Does it still exist? Does Ford own it? Did the studio throw it out(Like they did with the original Star Wars Death Star). Have any of you guys seen it?

Regards, HSJ.

I've been told either Lucas or Ford have it.

Well that explains why Indy looked so upset at the end of Raiders, wearing that gray fedora... Those bureaucratic fools must've packed it away with the ###### ark! ;)

Ford wore many hats in Raiders.
When one hat got trashed during filming, they just handed him a new one.

"Indiana Jones and the search for the Raiders hat".....good title for a movie. Marion threw it under the bed, remember?

Hmm - that French collector - did he buy that hat at an auction in Bev. Hills? I was there and saw it if so. Even bid on it. And while it is an Indiana Jones hat it looked WAAAAY LC to me instead of Raiders. The auction said "Raiders" but we all know how that goes.

I had an HJ LC with me at the time (made within six months of the LC hats) and it was identical to the one up for auction.

Keep in mind the hero hat from Raiders probably naturally tapered over time, especially if it was just kept on a shelf somewhere and not really archivally stored for all those years.

Beyond that, the color was darker, the brim narrower/ more even, and there was no super tight pinch in front.

Does the French collector have pics. of it?

I have a Poet that was made by Mr. Swales around the time of LC. The brim is narrower, and the dimensional cut occurs closer to the back of the brim than the front. If someone could verify that the auctioned hat was the same, then it was probably a LC hat and not a Raiders. The difference is so slight that I'm not sure you could tell very well from a photo, though.

I think the Waco plane hat, as seen in the Bonus DVD is the main Raiders hat. It has the channel under the ribbon in the front dent. It looks to me like it is worn in the rope swing into the river, but in none of the other Hawaii shots, except maybe the "Too bad the Hovitos don't know you like I do, Belloch." spider web shot. I think maybe it went into the river, and maybe this whip shot is what's left of it after the soaking. Not even turned anymore, the channel under the ribbon not visible, the ribbon looking a little loose, but I still think it's the main hat. Image The reason I believe, is that the Raiders hat has some oil soaked into it to simulate sweat stains. They are there in the Elstree shots, at the beginning of shooting, so it's not real sweat. There is a round spot of oil near the front of the brim on the Raiders hat that picks up a big round spot of dust. I think you can see it in the color picture. It's closer to the front, because the hat isn't turned. Image

i cant say the name of this french collector, he doesnt want. we were in contact years ago, but i have no news since 2 years now, i just know he lives in US.
he bought the hat directly from someone of the production and it was in 1986 if i well remember. i've seen this hat years ago.

i can tell you he has also more original props and gear from the indy and star wars trilogy....

when i made an interview of Pat Roach before he leaves us, i asked him if he has some remember about hats. he told me some crew members wore the hats during filming to "aged" them and maybe some dude have kept them...

Sounds cool. The auction I mentioned here was in the early '90's so it doesn't sound like that hat.

Right on!
