My new Non-Indy (but could be!) hat
I ordered this hat from David Morgan Monday, it just arrived today (that's fast service!). It is the Akubra "Squatter" in "Tawny Fawn". I must tell you, I have never been so totally happy and satisfied with a hat in my life! I opened the box and it just made my liver quiver. It is the most magnificent hat I ever set upon my head. The felt is nice and stiff (the way I like it!) and holds it's shape beautifully. It responds to steam very nicely. It had no real taper at all in the blocked shape on the front and back in a side view, and CHECK OUT THAT REVERSE TAPER in the front view!!!!
The "Tawny Fawn" color is really beautiful. It is a "dark tan"...to the point of being almost called "light-medium brown". The ribbon and matching bound edge is a true medium-dark brown, and looks super nice. I feel that this Tawny Fawn color would actually better represent the Indy color than some of the super dark brown out there now. I never thought the hat looked that dark in the movie.
The crown is advertised as being 5 1/4" high, but I knew that had to be a misprint, as it looked so much taller. By my measurement, it's about 5 3/4", best I can tell. My finished crown height (at the very front) is about 4 1/2". My center crease is not too deep, and there's no hitting the top of my head with it at all. It bashed VERY easily. The brim is 3" wide, and it is stiff enough so I can put my curl on it, which I cannot do with a floppy hat. It comes with little chin stap hooks, which are pretty neat and unobtrusive, and they can be easily covered by a wider ribbon, if desired (the right side is covered anyway). I even got a chin strap for it, but haven't put it on yet.
I might fiddle around with the brim a bit more, but I am substantially happy with my work on a hat that I am totally happy with! I cannot recommend this hat (and David Morgan) enough, and an enterprising individual could easily make a superb Indy hat from it!
Without further adieu, the photos...
Notice, by the way, I'm now wearing a size Large shirt and 34 jeans (all my XL shirts and 36 jeans are all now too big for me!)
What do you think? Bill Jordan?
Oh, I also just ordered an Akubra Federation in this same color from HatsDirect! I can only hope it is as nice as this one!

Bill Jordan indeed!!!!! You just need the clipped moustache!
GREAT hat, and even before you've worn it and 'made it your own', you can see it has it's own character! Rare for an out of the box hat...even an Akubra!
I'm impressed!!
HIGH regards! Michaelson

Best I can tell, the only real differences between the Squatter and the Bushman are that the Bushman is a bit darker in color, and has the narrow ribbon, along with the brim being (I think) 1/8" wider. I debated which one to get too!
I'll get some photos later of the hat by itself so you can see the very UN tapered shape better.

Here's the hat by itself. The camera just will not capture the color of the hat.
Once again, I really love this hat, and I like the bash I have, kind of a Southern/Western Fedora....hey, I can't have all my hats be an "Indy" hat! But, you can see that this hat has some Serious Indy potential! Now, when the Federation gets here...
