removing batting in US Wings jackets

Post by Arca Perdida »

I have 2 of their clearance jackets, one in goat and one in antique lamb. I've been reading about folks removing the batting and getting a much better drape, at the expense of warmth.
I'm contemplating doing that to one of my jackets, but would like to keep the other for colder weather.
Should I do it to the lamb, since the goat is probably more insulating and a better winter jacket to begin with?

Then, if I do that, what's the best way? Where is best place to slit the lining open in terms of ease of removing the batting as well as fixing the lining when I'm done? I can't sew ;)

Thanks

If you choose to remove the batting, I'd do it on only ONE of the jackets. Wait a while and see if you like the one without the batting before removing it on the other. I have a USW G-2 in antique lamb which I like (after I got one that fit me correctly). I opted to keep the batting in.

Agreed. One jacket at a time. Once removed, it can't be replaced.

batting removal

Post by skbellis »

I kept the batting in my US Wings G-2, but I opted to remove it from my US Wings Horsehide Indy.

Get yourself a seam ripper and undo one of the seams in the middle of the jacket. Make the open seam big enough to get your hand and part of your arm into.I think your best bet is to sort of open it up in the middle, making it easier to re-sew when you are done. Once you have the opening just reach in and start pulling the batting out. It may take a little while, the batting seams to stick on some of the seams and near the bottom of the sleeves. When you are finished, neatly sew the lining back. Hope that explains it well enough.

Cheers,

---Scott

i actually opted to pop the stitching in the armpit of my liner. made a hole big enough to get my arm in to pull the batting out from both sides. really you can do it at any of the seems i just chose the arm pit as it was one of the least visible.

Does the American made USW jackets have batting?
Because my goatskin jacket doesn't seem to have it.

I believe my USW G-2 is American made. I can't find a label in it anywhere saying it was made anywhere else. It has batting.

I felt around the inside of my jacket and all I felt was the polyester lining and leather.
So I'm guessing my jacket doesn't have batting.

IndyFan, I think this is it :)

Thanks for the tips. I would definitely pick one to do that to, not both. Besides, I'd like to keep one for colder weather.
What holds the batting in place inside the jacket? Is it possible to damage any of the stitching when pulling it out if it's stuck on it?

IF89. telling by your three piece sleeve, I'm guessing it's a clearance jacket.
Arca Perdida stated that his is an import and has a batting.
So yours might have one too, if it's an import.
I don't know, I could be wrong.
Mine is US made and it doesn't have a batting.
I know it doesn't cause I just cut a little slit in the inside of my jacket and saw nothing but leather.
Don't worry I'm gonna sew it up ASAP.

As far as I know the batting isn't actually insulation. I think it's used to help hold the liner together while it's being constructed. The batting is sewn into the liner only around the seams-

According to Wings, it is insulation. The reason it's only sewn at the seams is to allow air to circulate, keeping the warm air close to the body, and cold air out.

I'm sure it was applied to simply insulate the fish, too. 8)

IF89, according to fishmeok and Michaelson,
the batting is located only around the seams.
That should answer your question about where the batting is.

No, that's not what I said. It's ATTACHED, or sewn in at the seams. It's all behind the entire lining of the jacket.

I've read before that the batting serves 2 purposes. Insulation and to give the jacket some shape. The latter explains why it drapes better without it. Because your body gives it the shape.

So, if it's attached at the seams, how do I make sure not to rip that when I'm pulling it out?

Coffee rules! Just gotta go easy on the Bailey's.

Yet another reason why I never remove batting from a jacket. If it's expecting MY body to give it shape, I may as well wear a burlap bag!

Ah- maybe that's why mine was a "clearance" jacket- the batting was only at the ends of the arms and around the armpits...

Still think it looks better without the stuffing though.

Easy answer. Remove batting. Jacket fits better. Weather gets colder. I put on sweater underneath. Done deal.

As observed by INDY89;My US Wings US-made Indy Goatskin has no batting material between the lining and leather shell. Through the lining all you can feel is the leather, there is nothing else in there.

I removed the batting from my USWings clearance goat. I just carefully opened one of the liner seams and stuck my hand in gently and carefully started removing the batting. Then I had a local tailor sew it back up for $5.00 so it looked like new again.
It did improve the drape and it's perfect right now for our current Seattle temps.

Not only did my goat have the batting, but it also had thin shoulder pads - which I promptly removed! IT fits fantastic now!

I also have a vin cow US wings, which now has the batting removed but it didn't have the shoulder padding.

Did anyone else have shoulder pads on their import Indy jackets?

I had shoulder pads on my recent pre-distressed Wested prototype, but I'm not sure if it's made outside of the UK or not...

Just out of curiousity, do you find that it fits a little larger now or is the sizing more or less the same as it was with the batting in?

Julian

I have found that the fit is the same without the batting, it just drapes better and is not so "puffy". Removing the batting is a vast improvement on these US wings jackets...Also, don't forget to remove the shoulder pads, too!
