Indy's Gladstone Bag

Post by Forrestal »

As Indy walks to Pankot Palace either he or Short Round is carrying a Gladstone type valise(bag). Anyone know anything about it? Where to buy one?

Hey!! I'm talking about the suit case they are carrying. It's a Gladstone type suit case or bag. Very popular in the 30's and 40's. Anybody know anything about them at all??

Absolutely. I'm ALWAYS on the prowl for them, but man are THEY hard to find, let alone find in any kind of decent condition. I've seen poor condition examples starting at $20, and next to mint for $199. Not sure why these are so expensive, but they tend to pull in pretty stout prices, and that seems to be in not only high end stores, but back water odds and ends stores as well! Has anyone else found a better source? Regards. Michaelson

I've always loved that bag, wish I could find one for a good price somewhere.

Ebay is a good source for these type of bags. They appear quite often in auctions.

Here's one that has that Indy "flavor" on eBay:

Do a search under valise or satchel or vintage suitcase. the one pictured was currently about $15, I think. I got a black leather valise with straps a while back and decopaged some vintage airlines tags onto it. I'll try to post a pic later.

The problem with the gladstone bag is that it suffered a lot more wear and tear on the leather simply due to it's design. The leather was constantly flexed when opened and closed. I'm personally wary of eBay auctions where you can't see the leather clearly on these bags. Many times they're so cracked with age and use that they're completely unusable. They look great in a display, but as a carry bag, forget it. I'm a BIG believer in personally seeing and inspecting the gladstone before purchase consideration. You can get away with it with the swing top bags, as the main wear and tear is at the locks and hinge. The gladstone, on the other hand, has both sides involved in the move, as well as ends, so be cautious if using internet sales on this item. Just stating my experience with the item. (you know, the usual 'Mission Impossible' type disclaimer. ) Regards. Michaelson

Buyer beware. Well, this one wasn't too bad for $30. I do use it.

Here you go: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... 2157606487

Are those measurements right? 19x6.5x9.5? It's reproduction so the leather should be o.k...

Kind regards,
Indy
