O.K. ...I've just recently purchased a regular Akubra federation (still waiting for it ), which (according to the website ) already comes with a deminsionally cut brim. I've read posts from a few folks on here that say they've had to cut theirs when they got it, and others who have said that they didn't. Why would I have to cut the brim if it already comes with a dimensional cut ?
Anyone that has cut/untouched their hats, please post pics if posssible.

Thanx K...I appreciate it. By the By and OT, I used your holster template and just finished sewing mine up and oiling the leather. Should have it dyed and clearcoated by next week. Only thing was, I couldn't get the correct size on my wifes computer, so I taped 3 pieces of computer paper together and taped them to the monitor and TRACED IT !! Only took me 'bout 30 mins. Anyhoo, thanx in advance for the pics of you lid.

akubra feds are higher (5 3/4" or 6" open crown) and wider in the brim (is it 70 x 73 mm?) than the screen hat. on some faces/builds, this hat suits them quite nicely....ie - if ford and shaq had the same head size, the raiders hat would look too small on shaq.....he'd probably be better off with a federation

Here goes, I'm not sure just how clear this is on photos.
First the uncut then the cut brim.

K & G have pretty much hit the nail on the head, there. While the Akubras come in differen HAT sizes, the actual dimensions of the hat (i.e. brim width and crown height) were designed to be a bit more "one size fits all", to allow the folks with larger sizes or faces or facial features to get enough brim and crown to balance out the whole look. Plus, one has to consider that the Fed line was created at a time when other factory made hats were unable to offer crown heights or brim widths that were sufficient for what was considered a good Indy look back then. Add to that the popularity of taller crowns and wider brims at that time and that explains why the Feds came with such generous proportions. I, personally, opted to sand the edges of my brim a bit narrower, rather than using scissors, as I didn't need to remove all that much width. But I'm a 7 3/8 with a wider face. Someone who's a size 7 with a narrow face might have to break out the snippers.

It is likely that any of the "old timers" on this site, would recommend you hold on the cutting. Wear the hat, gain a feel for how it looks on you. Then, after a bit, you may decide the brim is too wide for your face's particular shape. The stock dimensional cut is but an attempt to "cover the crowd." Slight "tweaking" is what makes this hobby, fun. Once you cut, you can't go back.o-wj wrote:..Why would I have to cut the brim if it already comes with a dimensional cut ?

Hear hear, as I said it took me a year before I finally nailed my (mild)dissatisfaction down to the brim size.Dr.Seuss wrote:Wear the hat, gain a feel for how it looks on you. Then, after a bit, you may decide the brim is too wide for your face's particular shape.
JAN has a guide on his site that can indicate what to look for.
