Reblocking Time - thougths?
Well, after nearly three years of abuse, my first Akubra Federation is going in for a reblock. If this was a lesser hat, I probably wouldn't bother, but "Old Faithful" still has plenty of life in her, despite my mistakes and mistreatment.
So, this lid will become my whip-cracking hat (mainly) when the job is done. With that in mind, I thought I'd get a quick weekend poll as to what bash my whip-cracking hat should be. What do you think?

i truly believe that there were only 2 styles in raiders...soc and everything else. i don't see a distinctive difference between the idol grab, the raven bar, the truck chase, the flying wing, the wos, etc.....to me the subtle nuances that you need to recreate the look for that exact scene may get tweaked when you need to adjust it to your liking, or will change shape when you place the hat on your head, and after that, boom...it suddenly becomes the other scene. i credit this effect to the fact that that hat was very floppy and changed its shape when a stiff breeze blew on it (remember pagey's hat or when ford was on the horse looking down at the truck).
now the soc hat was different. this hat was super smooshed and the crown is now different than the other scenes with the bulging mushroom effect. the brim is barely flanged up anymore in the back and sides, i.e. its lost its lively curls. this hat is one mean mamma jamma looking fed. this however, cannot be done by the hatter during a reblock...its up to you to get it back to the point where you almost need another reblock.
as far as i know, steve blocks the hat and then turns it to get the raiders brim....everything else is up to you....am i wrong?

Unless Steve has changed his modus operandi, he used to just say 'pick a scene', and he'd match it. He does turn it, unless you ask him not to, but he also does shape the crown to a particular scene.Indiana G wrote:as far as i know, steve blocks the hat and then turns it to get the raiders brim....everything else is up to you....am i wrong?
(but I agree with you on this...there's SOC, and then there's the rest. Not that the rest isn't cool, but they are so relatively close to each other compared to SOC, that my love of the 'beaten in look' of SOC kind of blinds me to the variations between the others.)

well put jerry.
chewie, IMHO, start with either the idol grab or the raven bar bash (same bash, its just you wear the idol grab higher on your head )....with time and fiddling, you'll get to the flying wing, then the truck chase, then finally the soc....by then you're whip cracking hat will have a tonne of stories and some great memories

Indiana G, you've described my "life plan" for my AB! It's based on the Idol Grab (with a gentler pinch). With the federation, it already has it's adventures, so character is already included.
I am partial to the SoC. But I'm not just looking at the crown. To me, part of what changes the hat's look is the brim combined with the crown. I like the "smile" of some of the other scenes, but it wouldn't work with the SoC crown. Well, just my current thought ramblings...
Keep the votes comin'!
