40R vs 40L for 5'10?

Post by Castor Dioscuri »

Yes, I'm actually getting my third Wested next week... But this time, I'm going to try for an off-the-rack, and this is where my question comes in:

I'm not too sure which one to go for; regular, or long.

While I personally think that my current 25" back length is perfect, the standard sizes are 24" and 26" (r vs l respectively). And this is really bugging me, as I think 24 would be a tad too short, while 26 would be a tad too long (read modern).

Similarly, if I go with a regular, the sleeves will be 3/4 of an inch above the norm, while a long would a 1/4 of an inch below. What would you guys suggest?

Another thing that I'm worried about is shrinking. Since I hear that leather tends to shrink over time, should I err on the side of caution and get a long instead? Or is that not going to play a factor at all? (consider that the jacket will be predistressed)

As for myself, I'm 5'10, of average build, and my hobbies are... yikes, wrong site. ;)

Anyways, I know this question does seem really nitpicky, but hey, you folks are the experts! ;)

I'm about 5'10"/11" and I guess my arms are a little lengthy (athletic) and I require a longer jacket than normal, but mostly because I can not stand to have short sleeves, it bug the heck out of me to reach and have the cuff area come up to my forearm. Also, the TofD look is coolest for the body length too, just MHO.

Why not get a tailored one rather than an off-the-rack? They cost the same don't they?

If this is really that big a deal for you, I'd say get it tailored. 40R vs. 40L depends heavily on your own frame, not your height. Where's your waistline? How long is your torso? If you're 5'10 but have a waistline at, say, 3'5, it's gonna look a lot different on you than if you're 5'10 and have a wasitline at 4' even. Know what I mean?

Yeah, what they said. Go tailored if its that important. Otherwise, I would pick the long and be done with it. Better to have a little extra that can be taken in.

Sorry for the late reply, but the reason for getting an off the rack is because I'm getting one of the new worn-look lambskin ROLA authentics from Wested, which only come off the rack ;)

Decided to play it safe and go with the long since I doubt I'll be wearing it with a holster much ;) and have decided to use this one as my 'travel' jacket. Cat's out of the bag, will post pics once it arrives!

Oh I didn't know that. Are those jackets cheaper than the tailored ones?
