Alan Grants hat

Post by Dutch_jones »

Does anybody know what kind of hat Alan Grant is wearing in the first Jurassic park movie?

The screen-worn hat was auctioned on Ebay: Live on 15 December 2006. Expected value: $800-1200!

That seems pretty reasonable (in terms that it's not completely out of reach). If you were a big enough fan, it's a kind of investment I'd guess.

How much would you expect one of the original fedoras from Raiders to go for?

I'd love to know if you find anything, Dutch. I've not been able to find anything in searching... Alan Grant's hat is one I'd like as well.

Funny enough, Grant's role was originally for Harrison Ford and Connery was supposed to be Hammond.
Talking of hats in JP... anyone has noticed the hat that an extra is wearing at the beginning while Alan Grant is scarying the kid who said that the Velociraptor looks like a big chicken? Looks pretty... indyesque :P

I believe the 3rd film hat was identified as an Akubra.

i just watched the third film...after someone was talking about it here a bit ago...

anyway i was eyeballing his hat and was trying to figure out what it was. i did like the look of it, any idea what model akubra it might be? almost looks like a federation in the tawny fawn (seems to light in many pictures to be the mid brown), but it seems to have a greenish hew to it.

It's definately NOT a Federation. The crown is too low. From what I see, it looks to be a muted moss green color. I've always liked it, but I haven't seen anything out there that reminds me of it.

yeah i couldn't find anything that matched as far as color goes, it looks very much green in some scenes and light tan in others (darn lighting). as far as crown height goes it had a tear drop bash which i think will lower the crown height quite a bit and bring in a bit of taper.

but hey we will see i've ordered a second federation in tawny fawn and i'll be bashing it like this so we will see how it looks.

Looks pretty good to me! It looks like a SunBody hat. They make palm leaf hats for other folks to retail. I got one off eBay and the neat thing about them is you can soak them and reshape them almost anyway you like without harming the hat. (However, this would NOT be a good idea on a true panama.) The palm leaf hats are generally innexpensive and pretty good hats, but they are thick, stiff, and heavier than you might think. They make great sun and weather protection, though, which is what they're designed for.

Who is this lady, and where is her website. I've always been fond of Alan Grants hat, whole reason I started wearing hats in the first place.

Staw hat

Post by Indiana MarkVII »

I would be interested in contact information for that hat maker/supplier. A 4" brim is exactly what the dermotologist recommended for our Arizona sun.

If you do a search on eBay for "palm leaf hat" or "SunBody hat" you'll find a number of vendors who carry them. If you go to their stores, you might find additional styles, etc. You can also order directly from http://www.sunbody.com. I think that all these hat bodies are essentially made by the same folks and sent to places like SunBody, who, in turn, sells wholesale to many of the folks who then, in turn, sell them to you. You can get better prices from the retailers, though. By the way, MarkVII, what's your hat size?

Hat size

Post by Indiana MarkVII »

I'm at a 7 3/8 or a 59, but sometimes that size seems just a smidgen too tight. Steve made my first AB just a bit too big and the hat came down to my ears. He fixed it pronto, and I felt that his turnaround time made me feel like I was his only customer.

Wierd. Do a google for Sunbody hats, then...

Anyway, if you wore a 7 1/4, I may have been able to help you out.
