Indy Jacket worn open..

Post by Doug C »

Just watched Raiders (again) with the kids and what I noticed this time about the jacket is how cool it looks in the opening sceens while Indy is wearing it open in the cave. I noted that none of mine have ever looked that good while being worn open - don't know why, this jacket thing is just an enigma isn't it? I usually like to wear it just slightly zipped because when I leave it un-zipped it feels, well different and definately not as cool as the one HF is wearing in that opening sceen. I did notice that the jacket fits him somewhat large and longer in those sceens too. Just some observations..

I actually think HF wears the same jacket through the whole movie. Mostly because of the exacting way the "demon roll" is always present (on the non-stormflap side) it really turns out and over that zipper. Also because of the jagged looking stretch mark on the upper chest area (on the right hand side). Just opinions from recent observations :)

Well, I'm probably wrong, but I think that his jacket probably has a smaller chest size (since it hangs open so much), and is tapered at the waist by alot (to evenly match the waist)...

Then again, I'm basing my opinion on this picture:

I think the key is a very tapered waist

That jacket creates an illusion of bring many things. Some of you looking at the jacket say it looks bigger on him. Others say it looks tighter in the chest. Some say it is longer.

My turn. That jacket looks looser because it is worn open and is hanging off Ford's shoulders. This also makes the sleeves seem longer. If you pull the jacket up so the collar is at his shirt collar and the shoulder lined up, you would see it differently.

Also, if you take a jacket and crunch the front panels to the side while wet/damp and let it dry, you will get a jacket that stays wide open easier.

I agree but also think high arm holes are essential too :)

I don't think HF raiders jacket has a smaller chest size or is tappered at the waist.
I think it just looks so loose because it don't have any leather facings. This makes the jacket fall much different in the front. And don't forget that the silver aluminium? zipper is less heavier than the thick brass zipper which wested offers. I can actually see this on my new Lambtouch Raiders jacket which has nearly all of the SA specs.

Much regards

And look at those big fat pocket flaps! :D Those are awesome, and look nothing like any I have seen on a Wested before.

If you look around the arm pit and chest area you can see heavy creases. I think that these creases help the jacket stay open and look smaller or tighter. Has pointed out too, HF does wear his jacket very loose and off the shoulders.

i couldn't agree with rick5150 more....have a close look at the idol grab scene just before he kneels down. his jacket is worn way low on his shoulders....kind of like a "hey check out these pleats on my military shirt" pose.

when you wear your jacket back and down in this manner, you get those nice shoulder wrinkles:

HUH???? Nope, you are wearing two different coats--one for the zipped up scene and the other for the un-zipped scene

That's impossible. Peter had the original plans; he says on his site that his jackets are a duplicate of the original worn by HF. What about that certificate of authenticity?

Just joking. I know what you mean. If only Wested would get those pockets right. I don't care all that much about the other details, but those #### pockets are wrong - even on his latest authentic, genuine, exact copy...

Yes they are. But you can always get the pockets exactly as you like on your custom order.

In my last order, which is on the way, I gave Wested 1/1 scale drawings of the pocket and pocket flap. I just hope they 'll get them right. Otherwise, I am doomed.

I find having the weight of something in the pockets like keys or gloves gives the jacket a nice swing when it's open..and I like shrugging the jacket back off the shoulders too(except when it's raining! ).

I think you're right about that.. One thing I noticed that I think contributes to the movie jacket's cool factor is that the bottom front lays over the gun holster (right hand side) which causes a flared appearance that we don't normally have going on everyday.

Anyone here stop to consider that the jacket was custom-tailored to Ford's frame at the time, which is why it looks so good?

Any of you guys ever been to a real custom tailor? I've been lucky enough to have the opportunity and let me tell you, it makes a HUGE difference. A tailored suit and an "off the rack" suit look totally different because of very subtle things.

What's more, there's no substitute for actually BEING in the tailor's shop. You can send the measurements, but it makes things a lot easier if the tailor can make the pattern himself based of of YOU rather than based off of numbers.

That's the key to why Ford's jacket looks so good on him. :)

How in the Hey-HO-a-Lina do you wear in off the shoulders. Maybe mine are just too broad to achieve this look

Where is the bottom of the display? i can't see the bottom of the jacket.

thin "wavey" (silver) zipper, no leather facing and a thicker leather than most modern Lambskin..maybe even add 'a bit on the roomy side' to that list.. those are the thing that for me, give the cool drape and general look of this jacket, particularly when worn open.
