Akubra

Post by soulman »

I want to buy one as the price is right and have heard good things about the quality. The question I have is how much is the customs fee to bring the hat to the U.S.? Thanks in advance!

Nada. The hat's like, a hundred something bucks out the door, and that's all you pay. It's all I paid.

No Customs Fee. Total price, with airmail, $137.20. It really is a tremendous value.

hatsdirect will also claim the package as a 'gift' as well which nullifies customs/brokerage fees most of the time. thats a definite plus in dealing with these folks.

what's the wait time for a fed deluxe? Aren't there some sizing issues?

Depends on where you're located...but it's anywhere from 7 to 10 days anywhere in the world.

And no, if you supply them with your actual head measurement and ask for that size hat to be sent, they'll make sure you get one that's your size.

The hat is a little fuzzy when it's brand new but that's not an issue after a short period of time. The crown height is 6 inches which by some is a bit tall. A lot of folks go for the 5 1/2 inch crown now. It all depends on your personal tastes. I own the Fed. Deluxe and it is a great hat and you can't beat the customer service or the shipping time.

The hat does come open crowned and can be hard to bash if your new to it. Mine has gone through a lot of "trial and error" but this was my first real Indy hat so that's expected. It's held up quite well. They are good tough hats and not matter what they make darn fine Indy hats. I've never heard of anyone having to trim their brims before. They should all be dimensional cut.

If your going to go with an Akurba go for the Deluxe.....OR..

There is another option out there. Jimmy Pierce Designs offers a good hat at a cheaper price. It can be a little tough to bash to but it is also another excellent "low cost" Indy hat and people have gotten some excellent results from it. The wait time is a little longer but you can alter the crown height. So you could get a 5 1/2 crown where with the Akubra your stuck with a 6 inch crown.

If you are looking at the other colors, (tawny fawn specifically), they are back-ordered. Expect a month, or so, wait for that color.

13 days of shipping and $40 in customs (sweden) for me just recently. Worth every penny though.

When I ordered mine almost four years ago now I had to wait two months for it to arrive; I don't recollect any customs fees though.

Shipping to the US has no customs fees, as has been said. The deluxe has the best color new, but my regular Fed from two years ago has a dusty brown color now that looks very... well... Indy.

Pitfall also has a good suggestion. Jimmy makes a nice rabbit Indy. I prefer it over the Akubra for an Indy hat specifically, but the Akubra's are well-tested standards. You can't go wrong either way.

I just bought a third Federation last week, this time a gray one. Just like the two previous hats it came in about 3 days. Customs fees are largely an "outside the USA" phenomenon, so there's no worry about that.

My main Indy hat is a Federation Deluxe, and having had both a regular Fed and the deluxe I can say I much prefer the deluxe. Like others have said the color is great, and I found the bash fell into the hat pretty easily, much easier than the brown regular Federation I used to have. I've had my deluxe for about 8 months now and it's baby soft and really comfortable.

Here's my Deluxe:

And my newest baby, the gray Regular:

And when I'm ready for number four, it'll be another Akubra, I'm sure of that. :)

Okay, I'm not sure if you've made up your mind about which hat to buy or not...if you have, and you're going for the Akubra, then more power to ya. I've got a Federation Deluxe myself, had it for nearly 4 years now. Thing looks better than ever. Tough hat, takes a beating and still looks good.

I'm still on the fence with this one. My first hat was the Mighty Morphing Dorfman. Which true to its name tapered after getting wet. So i'm gonna be more careful this time around

The Akubras can handle a lot of rough weather without any ill effect, but the jury is still out on the JPD's reliability since it's relatively new. HOWEVER, my JPD is now a shrunken mess after only a few short months, so keep that in mind.

So, in my opinion, if durability and taper are your concerns, you can't really go wrong with the AKUBRA. I know the Akubras will hold up but the JPD is off to a horrible start.

I've ordered at least 3 times from HatsDirect, maybe 4. All came within
5 working days and I did not pay any customs fees. Mailman drove it right to my door. I had to go out to his car and get it, though.
