raiders fedora was a spare

Post by Indiana G »

all right...since the fedora board is slow moving as of late i think i'm gonna have to go in a stir up some ka ka.

the hat that all you raiders fans come to know and love was indy's spare hat. much of us who are fedora afici....officia....afishian....scandinavia, i think i'll need your help again.....we have that spare hat that we throw on when we want to work outside or to play fetch with the dog with (the hat, not a stick)....the one that you won't mind sitting on or throwing around when you get to the park and forget the frisbee....you know the one!

yes this hat was his spare. a hat that he didn't care jumping into a peruvian river with...a hat that he just threw in his suitcase and crushed along with his other gear....and a hat that he just left on the bantu wind because he didn't care about it.

why is that? because it had no taper which indy prefers. he prefers it so much that he turned a chinese boy into a hatblock in india to ensure that his TOD hat dried nicely and didn't ruin the nice taper that was in his hat, he risked his arm in the TOD spike room to get it back and the only time he didn't wear it was when he was drugged out of his mind from the blood of kali. a year later he had to go to peru and he thought, "no way am i going to take my nice tapered hat on this dangerous trip, i'm gonna take my spare stove pipe hat becuase i don't care what i look like when i'm abroad.

other incidents to prove my point....indy wanted to look his best to meet his dad so he put on a tie and his small blocked hj hat (not the raiders hat). and near the end of LC when the hat fell off prior to a near death plummit in the german tank, indy prayed to god to get his nicely tapered hat back and so mr. almighty abliged and blew it back to him....if it were the raiders hat, god would have made sure it burnt up with vogel and the tank.

....and now, mr. michaelson i will take an extended stay under the plymouth for about a day or so......i've brought a thermos full of coffee and a cooler full of sandwhiches

p.s. - i love the raiders hat.....just ask fedora :D

whoa..man...they are beautiful....now look what you've done!!!

....my credit card just fell on the phone and dialed up o'connor shoes....now i have to talk to them i guess......

..and back to our regularly scheduled program.....raiders hats are unnatural as they are problematic when it rains due to the fact that they collect water. you will not have this problem with a tapered hat as it is designed to give appropriate runoff for the rain.......

Forgive me for sticking my nose into the business of the patriarchs of this forum and adding to the scandalous claims that Indiana G has made, but I can see his point. In 1935 and 1938 it was obvious that Indy loved his hat and in 1936 loathed the chunk of felt that was on his head (as stated in the earlier post). But, I don't think the reason he wanted to save it was for the taper, but rather sentimentality.

After all, he aparently got it from a crook that tried to kill him and received it when he was utterly defeated and humiliated. The crook's insulting I'm-better-than-you hat placement made the fedora dear to his heart and he certainly couldn't be parted from it. I can't think of a more touching momento to wear all your life than a hat you received as an insult and a hint to grow up and quit being such a naiive idealist.
But, it is obvious in Raiders that he wears his hat only for some ridiculous reason like keeping the sun out of his eyes. Even in the end he apparently loses it completely on Katanga's boat ( I say "loses" in the loosest sense as he probably traded it off to one of the crew men for a pack of spearmint gum or some cheap bathtub gin). Forget the fact that the Raiders fedora looked and accidented his attire better than his other hat, sentimentality reigns.

Personally, I think in LC Indy should have just thrown the hat back at the guy and told him what he could do with it. Then he would be free to wear his Raiders fedora all the time. Or, just get a new one for each adventure.

Of course, maybe it was all just a movie making mix-up. It makes sense that Steven Spielberg just decided that Indy would have a freaky obsession with saving his hat in the last two movies and didn't think of it for Raiders. But, that would be ridiculous, I don't really know what I'm talking about.

Sorry again for butting in, and not adding much to what was already stated, but I noticed what Indiana G said, and I have to agree with him, the Raiders hat is just a replacement.

Hmm, this reminds me of something I read somewhere... (reaches for "Raiders of the Lost Ark" novelisation by Cambell Black). Here it is. On page 180 when Indy is remonstrating with Colonel Musgrove about the fate of the Ark (you know, the "Top men..." scene) Indy complains that "This whole affair cost me my favourite hat."

So I think that Indy actually preferred the Raiders hat to all his others, maybe because this is the very hat that Fedora plopped on his head way back in Utah 1912.

I am new here, so this might have been covered in years past. Since I developed this particular quirk, I have watched all the movies repeatedly through different eyes. It is obvious to me that when Indy received his hat in 1912 (in UTAH!!!) it had a much thinner ribbon / bow than any hats pictured in any other scene in the three movies. So either he had it replaced later with his trademark wide ribbon (perhaps during a reblock??), or it's a different hat.

By the way, when I purchased my Aldens last summer, they were very red, with a hint of orange. After several coats of brown tint pecards, they have taken on a nice brown luster.

That is pretty interesting. Maybe that is why he went back to the taper loose pinch hat, he lost his favorite and wasn't going to go through "the pain" of losing another great hat, so his new adventure hat became a dorfman pacifica. :D

Didn't that adventure cost him a whip too?

in the script Indy looses his hat(s) two times, during the boulder scene and while he were swimming to reach the sub BUT in the movie(as we all know) his hat doesnt get crushed by the boulder and he doesnt loose it in the ocean, because it's left in his room on the bantu wind. he got it back from katanga. How do i know?you can see that indy has changed his shirt before he got on the boat(at sallah's house were he also got his luggage) he got the grey hat and blue suit back from katanga.
if he didnt give the stuff back he would have sallah on his neck

spielberg quote: Indy never looses his hat!

and i saw "treasure of the peacocks eye" yesterday. there is a scene with pirates onboard a ship and Indy fights one. the pirate jumps down some stairs and waiting for indy to do the same. Indy jumps(salto) and looses his hat on top of the stairs but in the next clip it's placed on his head.
movie magic! (but man what a dreadful hat he wears in that episode!)

"This whole affair cost me my favourite hat."
come on now....he was talking to beaureocra....bewercrat...brewrocrat.....######!!! a little help scandinavia???

of course he would have played up the whole incident as he was also trying to get his expense receipts reimbursed as well. there was also a scene cut out from the movie on the washington steps with marion that went something like:

indy: "fools.....beauricratic fools...."

marion: "you know jones, the hat that you're wearing looks very grey to me"

indy: "yeah, thats what a guy on the seaclipper said to me when i got on boarrd before i came to nepal. its actually brown like the other hat....the one i lost."

marion: "didn't you get it back from katanga?"

indy: "nope. its my spare so i traded him for his skipper hat....i always wanted a skipper's hat. no big deal, i have my favourate hat at home still....it was blessed by a sri lankan shaman who thought he was in india".

marion: 'thats great.....come on, why don't you buy me a drink?"

indy: "sorry, me and chewie have to rendevouz with the fleet at the rebel secret base.............."

....er something like that....it was obviously left on the cutting room floor.

HILARIOUS!!! :D :D :D

Of course, the deleted part of this deleted scene actually continues from where you left off:

Indy: ...And before I meet up with Chewie I need to change into my Bob Dylan vest, striped pants and my brand-new slightly-charred Nazi boots, I find that they look very sci-fi.

Marion: Golly Indy, your styles really are swell! Personally, I'm thinking of growing my hair out and curling two braids around my ears.

Indy: Gee Marion, that sounds swell and all that, but if you're serious about the braid thing, I'm gonna have to call this relationship off. Nothing personal, but I'm not the kinda' fella that would go for a girl with a bizarre hair-do.

Marion: Oh well, that's alright, I have an appointment with Sallah to go and ride a jeep through a forbidden eye temple, or something like that. But, just for old time's sake...

(Marion punches Indy across the face and he rolls down all 134 marble steps. Landing at the bottom, Indy discovers to his horror that he has rolled over the top of his new HJ fedora, just delivered from England)

Roll credits.

Of course, the irony was too much and they decided to cut this scene out and replace it with some boring stock footage of government employees crating up the Ark of the Covenant and putting it away in a warehouse.

There's only one good reason why Idy took more care of his hats in ToD and LC!

Deborah Nadoolman was so angry he lost it in Raiders that he simply didn't dare to let it happen again!
