Shirt Decision... down to two.
OK, I know that a Magnoli would be ideal, but I just can't fit it into my budget. So, I've narrowed it down to either Todd's Costumes or What Price Glory's. I'm favoring WPG because they have a choice of sleeve lengths that will fit better, but I don't want a perfectly sized piece of junk. So, I'd like to get some input on these two shirts, specifically. What are they like, how accurate, how comfortable, quality..???

I know the problem you are facing as I just dealt with it myself. I bought the forever 21 shirt only it did not fit. So I looked at all the shirts. The WPG shirt from Todd's, the Magnoli, the Wested, and the Noel Howard. I sent out several PM's, and read several threads. I happen to be on a very limited budget and after considering the price, the Magnoli was the best option IMO. The wested shirt is only $75, but an extra $30ish to ship putting it at $105. The Noel Howard shirt is well over $100, so it was out automatically. I read so many bad reviews of the WPG shirt that I just could not buy it. I figured if I was going to go in for 60 (about the price of WPG), I might as well spend another 30 and get a shirt that is custom fit to me, and I have the choice of what color I want. Plus I haven't heard one bad thing about the Magnoli shirt. (I don't consider "too dressy" to be a bad review )
Anyway, that is how I came to my decision. Not to mention the fact that Indy Magnoli answered every question I had in an extremly timely manner. That made a large impression on me as he always responded immediately and made sure of my order when I placed it.
I said it before, if the shirt is half as good as his customer service, it will be a fantastic shirt.

chewie,
be very careful with the wpg shirt as it fits really large. even us gents that don't turn down seconds on the potatoes (i've got a 16 1/2" dress shirt size, 43" chest, 38" waist (actual)) find these shirts really large. the neck will probably fit ok but you will need to order extra length in the sleeves due to these shirts shrinking so much. with a 16 1/2" neck on my wpg shirt, i would estimate that i would need at least a 48 to 50" waist to fit the shirt decently. the proportions on this shirt is waaaaaaaaay out to lunch. the sleeves are extremely baggy as they compliment the huge body of the shirt. the fabric is quite 'cardboardy'...so much that the stitching will easily come undone around the buttonholes (ie, the coarse fabric cannot maintain the fine stitching around the button holes). i gave mine away to the salvation army just recently. if i would have known you wanted one i would have given it to you. these shirts are not worth the money as the quality is not there. you are better off getting a close enough frome forever21 or just save a bit for a magnoli.
cheers

Too dressy isn't a bad thing if you are looking for a dress shirt. If you want an Indiana Jones shirt, too dressy is a bad thing. This is adventure wear not vintage wear, and the two don't mix well with this particular outfit. If you are looking to be Indy-like" when you go to work or parties or whatever, then the Magnoli shirt would be a better choice.
The cut and material just make it more of a modified dress shirt look and feel, that's all. Just offering an opinion based on having held both in my hands. The Noel Howard is the absolute best option. But, if the money is an issue (and it can be for many of us at times), the Wested is the next best choice for cut, color, and material.

If you need a good shirt buy the Magnoli. It is not 100% accurate but it is 90% (missing a few details) accurate and MUCH more accurate than any other shirt in the market.
It has a PERFECT color which is even better than the one NH shirt has.
It's best advantage is that it is custom made, so go for a slim fit. The WPG and Wested are full body shirts to the extreme.
If you buy the Magnoli make sure you ask for soft collar and small buttons.
NH is still the best, (you get what you pay for) but Magnoli RULES.

Glad to hear that Magnoli is now offering a softer collar and smaller buttons, as both of those were big downfalls of his earlier offerings. But.... to say that anyone has a better color than Noel Howard for an Indy shirt is blasphemy. It is the same color and material used in the films, and screen caps from any scene can back that up.PLATON wrote:If you need a good shirt buy the Magnoli. Actually, I don't doubt that the NH shirt has the same color and material used in the films. However, if you pause your dvd in a cairo scene and take the NH and Magnoli shirts next to your TV you will see that Magnoli's is closer.
It's the tricks of the lights, I know, but Magnoli's is closer.
Also, you forget that I am not answering the question which shirt is better, (that would be the NH for sure) but which shirt someone with a limited budget should buy.
Don't buy the WPG, you will regret.

Well, I certainly hear something ringing out clearly! I guess I need to save up for anything that isn't a WPG/Todd shirt. Besides price as an issue, I'm a heavy guy (size 48 or 50 jacket) with an 18 1/2" neck but short arms (about 33"), so that's what pulled me away from Wested and toward WPG. What I want is an Indy shirt, not a dress shirt. I want it as close to the real thing as I can get, and I prefer soft and light. I already have my favored close-enough.
I have no doubts about Magnoli (I'm planning on a suit when I find a new job), it was just a price issue. However, I appreciate the tips about the collar and buttons. Short of striking it rich and getting a NH, I think I'll just save up for the Magnoli.
Thanks Guys

I feel your pain. I wear a 18" collar and a 48 jacket too. The 17x34 WPG shirt I had was SO big I could put it on and button it up over my Wested jacket! The only parts of the shirt that were the correct size were the collar and the cuffs.
The Wested shirt is cut VERY snugly, not just in the body but the sleeves as well. I couldn't roll up the sleeves and it was VERY tight across the chest. I think they run about a size smaller than marked, and the length is a little short for anyone over 6'.
Even though the color is a little dark I think the LL Bean shirt is probably the nicest close enough shirt out there. It's tough but lightweight and the quality is certainly there, even if the front pleats aren't.
So I think the three best options are saving up for a custom-sized Magnoli shirt, getting the LL Bean shirt, or waiting (hoping?) the Forever21 shirt gets restocked in XXL, which is where I'm at...

Looks like the F21 shirt is now only available in Medium. I'm glad I bought a second Large one when I did.
This shirt isn't carried in their stores by the way. At least they don't in the town I live in. So I'm assuming this is just a shirt only offered on their website. I have a feeling once they clear out these shirts they're done. If they were going to continue to carry it they would have restocked the other sizes by now.
Looks like this shirt is going the way of the Huskers and the Oak Creek Pants.

Is there an echo in here? I wasn't disagreeing with you, simply stating my opinion.Scandinavia Jones wrote:Yes... that's what I like with my MBA... I do enjoy my Wested too, for different reasons. As I said, depends what you're after.Abner1925 wrote:If you're after screen accuracy, then it is the best hands down. If you are looking for something else, then no.
