Hubertus

Post by Kaplan »

Is this the knife from RTOLA?

If so, is this a decent price?

Very good knives. I've had at least 13-15 of them cross my hands.
Not really a field knife though. More like a steak knife. At least thats what I use mine for.
webhead73 wrote:I have owned lots of knives in my time so $85 seems a bit steep for a single blade folding knife. If it were a specialty blade (skinning, combat, survival) and made by a reputable company, then I would consider it. I am sure that you can find a quality close enough knife for less than what they are asking. Where are their knives made? Is this a high end company?
They have been making this model since 1904, maybe even earlier, thats what I was told by someone who works at the company.

Here's the most significant thread on the topic.

Thanks for your help Adam.

One last question. Do I have to have it shipped to an FFL dealer? I mean...it's not a firearm or anything. It seems kind of silly. Anyone know the USPS regulations regarding this?

Well I hope not
I had 15+ of them shipped to my house from germany,
so I don't see why you would need to. Check your local laws though,
you never can tell with this kind of stuff.

When I bought mine, they declared it as a "wood working tool" on the customs declaration.

Hubertus are excllent quality knives that will take and hold a razor edge. I carry mine every day.

FWIW, my grandad is a avid knife collector. He also is one of the cheapest men on the planet and thinks the rest of the family should be the same. When I showed him my Hubertus, I kinda expected to get blessed out for spending $90 on a pocket knife. Instead he told me it was an excellent knife and well worth the money.

webhead73, don't worry about the blade breaking. Its about twice the thickness of my Swiss Army kinfe and I dare say better quality steel.

On aside note, when in the field, I usually have 3 knives. Hubertus in my pocket, Swiss Army in my pack and a bowie on my belt.

I've found that in the field I use my bowie more than anyother knife I own. It has enough heft to cut brush (much needed in my area) but much more carryable than a machete.

I do love my Swiss Army knife though. I can detail strip my 1911 with it and when I'm finished, pop the top off of a cold beer.

What type of bowie do you carry? I have a Western bowie (handed down from my father) and love it! Looks like this, though a bit more beat up:

I also carry a c1994 SAK Champ.

My dad carries one of those. Excellent knife! I love its vintage style as well.

Mine is an Ontario Spec Plus #5.

Ontario knives are super, especially for the money. But me, I'm a vintage type guy... though I do own a SOG Ranger as well:

(Don't tell anyone) :-$ 8-[

...and to get back on topic; I agree that Hubertus makes a great knife! :D

Nice work, VP. What did you make the blades out of? I've made knives as well, one out of an old file.

Kind regards,
Indy

Ordered them from a knife company in northern Finland. The only blade I've made myself was the machete one, http://indygear.com/cow/viewtopic.php?t=5586

I just purchased a Hubertus! Great knife. I have collected knives for over 25 years so I had to have one that was at least close to Indy's. It is a well made knife with beautiful stag.

I have a pretty large working knife collection, most of which are unfortunately packed away right now, but this is my favorite field knife right now. The large knife is a young Bowie in size and weight, so it works well on kindling and brush, and the smaller is perfect for general camp use. I also carry a Gerber Leatherman clone pretty much everywhere.

BTW, VP, I love Finnish knives and have several other. I got 2 of this one for my kids:

I haven't bought the Hubertus yet, but probably will. It looks like a fine knife and the price is not excessive for a high-quality German knife, especially with stag handles. It certainly is the closest match I have yet seen to Indy's knife, though the blade does seem a bit short.
