Who actually bashed the Raiders hat?

Post by Fedoraman »

There is alot of hub-bub about getting the right "Raiders" look from a new HJ. Some people say it's perfect with the right bash and smashing while others say the block has changed too much.

I am sure this question has been asked before, but who actually bashed/styled the hat? I know that Deborah Nametohardtospell was the costumer but beyond her and Harrison's butt's squashing the hat - who initially put in the off-center bash in the lids used on Raiders?

Swales? Some unknown costumer? Anybody?

Apparently, Swales. It's quoted on Indy gear and he told me in person. They liked the hat, and he adjusted it/ styled it for them. Who "they" were and how much he "styled" it are open to debate as there are a lot of differring accounts

Okay, if it was Swales - then how come he never talked about the turn? It was obviously used in all the hero hats so somebody had to have taken notice to replicate the look.

I am not convinced that other than the initial meeting, Swales had diddly to do with the hats.

Most of us have worked with experienced hatters and you they would definitely know if they had bashed a hat a certain way for a certain look...

I don't think we'll ever know. not unless you get Swales, Ford and Nadoolman in a room together comparing notes..."Well, I did this.." "Really? I did that!" "Yes, but we had to do this, because.."

I can't see Swales deliberately bashing a hat off centre - he was a milliner. I CAN imagine Spielberg or Lucas wanting an "of-kilter, dapper" look like in the old movies - and I can imagine Ford playing around with his hat. I can even imagine the film crew trying to work out how to keep that #### hat from falling off. BUT - we'll never know!!!

If that is the case, then why do all the "hero" hats seen in the film have the turn? My point is, somebody working the film 27 years ago had to consciously make the effort to bash the hats used to look exactly the same as the first one, right? Who was that person - the head costumer or what???

According to:

http://www.hollywood.com/moviedetail/Ra ... Ark/226602

The list is a little longer than just DN:

Sue Wain - Wardrobe
Rita Wakeley - Wardrobe Supervisor
Deborah Nadoolman - Costumes
Ian Hickinbotham - Wardrobe

So the question is, DOES ANYBODY KNOW THESE FOLKS?

My point EXACTLY.

The costume crew was different for TOD:

Costume Design by Anthony Powell (I)
Joanna Johnston .... assistant costume designer
Ron Beck (I) .... wardrobe supervisor
Barbara Kassel .... second unit wardrobe mistress
Janet Tebrooke .... wardrobe mistress
Patrick Wheatley .... wardrobe master

I think he might mean the Chachapoyan Temple hat, some of them look like they weren't turned.
