My first bash (with pics)

Post by blade runner »

I just got this Akubra. It is about a size too large, but I decided to keep it and hope it shrinks to the right size rather than send it back to Australia and wait for another one. For the next one I'll know better. In the mean time, I made my first attempt at bashing a hat. I don't think it is quite up to the standards of the more experienced members here, but I don't think it's too bad. Feel free to offer constructive criticism. (I left out the picture of me with the hat on because I don't think I'm fit to look at -- got to get back to that New Year's resolution to lose some weight, including from my fat, fat face.) Here's the hat:

That is a heck of job for your first bash! Reminds me of how my Fed Deluxe looked back when it was still new. Nice work!

Really nice job on the bash. Did you follow any "bash tips" from here or did you just go on instinct?

Is that a Regular or Deluxe Akubra and what size is it?

I know I shouldn't mention this (because of the gray/brown hat debate)but here goes.......At first I thought the hat in the middle pics was a different hat and it was gray.

great work on the bash. the sloping profile on the pinch and the curve from the front crown to the rear crown looks nice and clean. very nice dress fedora.

So did I, what kind of lighting did you use in those pics? Good looking bash.

:? I thought the same!! You all get out of my head - now! Gosh!

Nice bash! What style were you going after? Kinda looks like a Raiders / LC hyrbrid with the pinch there. Nice though!

Many thanks for the compliments!

I took one set of pictures first, and when I looked at them I noticed how gray they looked. I then took a second group of pictures, which is much more accurate regarding the color, and in fact the hat is even a bit darker brown. I'm not sure why they came out so different...they were taken in different spots in the same room, but the first pics had more light, both flourescent and incandescent.

The hat is a fed regular, size 59. I think I did a poor job measuring my head before I ordered and got it a little too big, but I'll make do for a while until I get another. I want to get a gray one that will go a little better with the suits I wear to work. I may have to go with something other than an Akubra, though, because it is a little tall for me. I understand the Adventurebilts are not quite as tall. Are there other makers that also have ones that are not so tall? Does AB (or the other makers) do them in gray?

As for the bash, I basically followed Pagey's tutorial, except I didn't do the turn. I wasn't trying for anything too specific as far as looks. I was going for a basic Raiders without being too severe with the pinch. With time and more practice I may go for some other looks.

I must say, though, even with it being a little too large and a little too tall, I really enjoy wearing the hat. Now I have an idea what I've been missing all this time :-({|= . I'm glad to be one of you now!

Looks good, just gotta push it down a little at the apex of the pinch for that camel hump effect.

Looks great. An akubra a touch big is far better than a touch too small. You can put foam strips under the band, or dampen the band/ribbon area and the hat will shrink a little and will conform to your head as you wear it, but wear it you must. cheers chauvel.
