Better pictures of my Jimmy Pierce REWORKED Gray fedora

Post by Fatdutchman »

OK. Here are some more pictures of my Jimmy Pierce reworked Gray fedora....the one shining star in my galaxy of hats.

He reblocked and reshaped and completely reworked this old hat for me. It is about 15 or more years old. "Beaver Hats". Felt is pretty thick, and relatively stiff. It always seemed like a pretty good quality hat. The felt feels and LOOKS very dense.

Now, the self-portraits are washed out and kinda goofy looking, so the hat looks MUCH better on me than in the lousy photos (it looks much better in the photos of just the hat alone).

I cut the brim to 2 3/4" front and back, and 2 1/2" on the sides, making it into a really nice '30's fedora. Obviously Indy inspired (which is exactly what I wanted!). I REALLY like this hat. And that backward cant of the rear of the crown is righteous, man!

I'm anxious to see Indiana Tone's JP Indy hat when he gets it!

Very, very nice! I like the looks of that hat, my compliments!

Tell me though, did Jimmy put that ribbon on there for you? Or did he just rework / reattach the existing ribbon? It looks great, anyway, and really matches the hat well!

That's his ribbon (it's similar to the ribbon I had on... but his is much nicer!). He blocked, and reshaped the hat, and put on the new ribbon, a new liner, and new sweatband (I always thought the hat itself was nice, but it came with a cheesy leatherette sweatband). I like the ribbon and bow. The bow looks nice and tight without being TIGHT like on Akubras, where the bow is stretched and pulled out at the tack points. Basically he made a new hat.

Though the photo is kinda washed-out, the side view picture is pretty well representative of the color of the hat and ribbon.

By the way, the total crown height is about 4 7/8". The front pinch height is about 4 3/4". To my eye, these are pretty much the "perfect" dimensions. If this hat were brown, with a dark ribbon, and the brim were about 2 7/8" by 2 5/8", you'd have your Raiders hat, man (though not all squinched up like Ford's was! :D ) I had to redo the bash, because my face is just ever so slightly off to the left, so I had to make the pinch and crease "turned" just a tad toward the bow side, otherwise, the pinch would always be centered over my right eye. There are a few spots here and there on the hat that need a little tweaking (steam and push out here, steam and smooth off there.....), but I am essentially happy with this hat. And I'm never happy with anything!

I think I paid about $85 for this hat in 1989. I was a senior in high school! That was a LOT of money to spend on a hat, man!

:rolling: RUN AWAY!!!!!!!

FD, that is one fine looking gray. What I think I still like best about it is you have an honest to gosh HISTORY with that hat...and it's still coming back strong after a rebuild. Now THAT'S the sign of a good hat, and a loyal hat wearer/owner.

I tip my fedora to you sir...and to JP for his fine work. He's good. He's VERY good. :D

Wear that gray in good health!

HIGH regards! Michaelson

I'd say he'd do most any hat.

The Miller hat he did looked good when I got it back, but the more I messed with it, the worse it got. I wanted the hat turned, so I wet it and rebashed it, and it seemed to shrink up in the crown a little bit. Nah, it's just my imagination. I wet it down again to move it back a little (I hat turned the hat a bit too much), and it got noticeably more tapered. I tried pushing, and pulling, and stretching, and just can't get it back out where I want it (and get it to stay). Oh, well.

This gray hat I have worn on and off for years. Worn in the rain. Doesn't seem to affect it at all. I DON'T know the felt content. I'm wearing it right now. I've been outside and will be outside working again in a little bit. It's about 28 degrees and falling, snow flurries, and wind blowing about 30 miles per hour....

Really? I heard we had another cold wave coming down our way from yours, but just furries involved.

UPDATE: Snow just got here. Coming down pretty good too, but not sticking!

Indiana_Tone wrote:Thanks, FatDutchman. I'm anxious to see the hat myself. :? :P I think it's en-route as of today. Yep. You can see it in JPD's blocking. Where the Akubra has to be worked to get that look, his hats will just "do" it.

(That remains to be backed up by a bash - which I could very well screw up - of course; but in looking at the reblock of your old (Now NEW) gray fed, and in other IJ style feds he's made, the JPDs have an edge in the block shape alone.) :D
Don't get me wrong, I still really enjoy my Fed Reg. But there is a trade-off between straighter sides OR deeper center dent on those. And I think the JPD is going to fit the bill nicely for being able to get both. ;)

Tone -- who, or what, is that behind you? Looks like a giant killer rabbit -- very dangerous. (Rabbits, why'd it have to be rabbits?)

Furries? Is THAT what's chasing Tone in his picture?

Michaelson, time to go back inside. Michaelson, stop staring up at the snow and come back in where it's warm. Michaelson . . .?

tone,

you are absolutely correct. i'd be willing to bet that if we ever find the hero hat and tried it on each of our heads, half of us in here would be saying "that ain't right".....and then the sound of steam kettles and belt sanders would be deafening.

any fedora hat oozes adventure depending on where it sits on your head, how the shape/bash compliment the face/head shape underneath it, and most importantly, if the wearer feels "indy" with the particular lid on.....it may not look indyish to others at a glance but who really cares about that.

screen accuracy at its purest depends if you had an 81 harrison ford build, his head shape, and his facial features....not too many can claim that unless you are harrison ford.

my point is, if we are comparing apples to apples: no, an akubra is not screen accurate in the sense that i have stated. your hat may not look good on my head. your hat on your head just screams raiders to me and i see it as being very screen accurate.
