Strap Causing Pocket Pull (pics added)
I recently noticed that the side straps on my HH Wested has been pulling back the opening of the hand-warmer side pockets creating a stretch at the pocket opening pulling towards the back. I'll try to take a photo of it to illustrate.
Is anyone else having a similar pull and is it normal to the jacket?

I just got it at the beginning of the year. It's about 10 months old, horsehide, size 44 -- fits fine.Swindiana wrote:How long have you had it, and is it your size if measuring?

The thing is, I never noticed that the straps pulled the pockets and I did recently have the jacket slightly altered by a taylor. The jacket is a regular size, not an 80s-Cut, and while it fit me, it was very wide in the sides -- lots of extra leather on the sides and raising my arms created that dreaded flying squirrel effect.
So I had the taylor take out a bit in the armpits, putting the armpits of the jacket higher which made the upper part of the jacket more narrow.
The jacket looks and fits much better now but I am not sure if the alteration may have caused the straps to pull more on the pockets. I can't see why since the only part of the jacket that was actually taken in was the upper torso.
This may actually be a non issue. I've been going through back posts and seen a number of photos from other members in which the pocket is similarly pulled by the straps. I will still take some photos of mine but here's a movie still I came across where you can see what I mean in the first shot. As I said, this really only happens when I have my jacket zipped.

For all I know, it's a common occurance on these jackets when zipped up. Anyone notice this on their jackets?

Maybe you have the straps pulled a bit too tight? The back panel will only stretch so much, and the extra pull is going to come from the pockets where there is some "loose" material. My HH does not do this at all, even when zipped. I have my straps, about medium tight, or about 1.25" through the buckle.
Finally got some pics to show what I mean. It's not really a big deal - I was just curious if it's normal that the jackets do this or if it may have been a side effect of the alteration I had done to the jacket (had it taken in to make it narrower and a tad tighter), although I have seen some photos in which other jackets look similarly stretched by the straps.
It just looks like I'm dancing salsa
You can see that the straps are not very tight and that the jacket fits loosely, although not too loose. I even tried loosening the straps all the way until they were barely attached but still did the same thing. I have to say it's not exactly stretching the pocket but rather the extra material in front of the pocket, creating that horizontal arrow shape.
The jacket was supposed to be a Raiders cut but it seems more of a Temple cut to me.
So do any other jackets do this or is it just mine?

Never experienced the pocket pull effect on my Wested lamb - the back panel, on the other hand, has some interesting stretch marks due to straps...
Not that I worry about it - the marks go well with the rest of the distressing...
I have some Rocky (flying squirrel) issues with my jacket too, which I'd like to get remedied... did you order your jacket with underarm gussets? I have them and fear that they might be a problem, should I take the jacket to a tailor...

Altering the upper part of the jacket would most likely change the way the entire jacket fits, so you might well be on to something there. Still, judging from the pics, I think the pocket issue is a small one - your jacket fits well, and looks good.garzo wrote:The jacket looks and fits much better now but I am not sure if the alteration may have caused the straps to pull more on the pockets. I lose the straps a bit to avoid that nasty effect. Do you remember if you see those marks in Raiders? I don't think I've ever noticed them in any scene. I might be wrong, in that case, it's screen accurateScandinavia Jones wrote:the back panel, on the other hand, has some interesting stretch marks due to straps...
