raiders ?s

Post by e.m.t. jones »

I need help with the turn, I understand the turn, but when you turn your hat doyou pop out all the dents. Does this you have adjust the center dent and the two front dents ?, or do you just move the pinch over ? , and how much. Do you think I should have fedora reblock my AB and have him do it ? I also still have that compression line prob in my pinch, I hoped a reblock and cleaning would help this. any opinions/ advice. emt

hat

You have to take out the creases to turn the hat. Firts is to stand in front of a mirror and turn the hat while it's on your head. Keep turning until the brim looks like the raiders hat ( brim ). then put in the creases.
I don't even think you need a reblock from Steve to get rid of the old crease job but you might need to send it to him so he can hit it with steam ( while on the block). I could be wrong on this part, so you would have to contact Steve to make sure. The good thing about this it shouldn't take to long to get it back.

I, personally, find the turn to be a bit more effective if done with a fresh open crown, rather than re-bashing a normal "centered" hat. Of course, either will work but I've found that re-bashing can sometimes be a bit difficult, especially if your current "centered" bash has had a while to really "set" into the felt. Erasing that tight, Raiders front pinch isn't always easy, depending on the type of felt you're working with and it's thickness and "memory". Sometimes, while rebashing, the hat can morph back into the original, "centered" bash and screw the whole process up. But if your dealing with workable, thin felt, then you should be okay. My old Indiana Miller wouldn't take the turn, the old bash had been set in for years and the new, "turned" bash wouldn't stay put. When I got my Akubra Fed Deluxe, I turned it right away, when it was still new and open crown, and the bash held without any problems.

Go over to this thread and scroll down to Indiana_Tone's post - he actually put a video up so you can see it exactly.

And yes, that means you will be putting the pinch and bashes in slightly to the left of where they are now.

ok, I guess im still confused, I need to move the pinch over, in turn move the center dent, makes sense. Now im supposed to move the two bashes over ? :? I thought that doing the above two, and not moveing the bashes over was the reason why the bash on the right side had more volume to it . Moving the pinch and turning the hat on a movie set would be easy , would there be anyone in the costume dept that would be skilled enough to completly reshape a hat ? If so maybe thats why HJ cant get the shape right, because the shape of the hat was changed after it left the shop . ( just food for thought)

A question for Indiana_Tone, or really anybody... First off, that video is an excellent visual reference. I was just curious, maybe it's for getting the point across, but is the turn that extreme? It just seems like he turns it alot.

Just curious,

hat

Tone, I agree with you but look at photo's of the poet. The hat comes with a soft bash not like in Raiders ( really tight and tall pinch). I think ford put it on his head and the felt was so soft he didn't notice it was off center. Then he gave it a tight pinch. I never thought one person made the look of that hat.

I notice w/ my hat, I turned it and readjusted the bashes, and the right bash has a tendency to 'collapse' a bit further back, making it a bit larger of a dent. You still move the bash, but you might get more out of it naturally.

And to hit the other question, yes, Fedora does/can turn the hats for you (I think it's his default if you don't say otherwise, but I could be mis-remembering). Still, as Tone mentioned, the turn was often to gain a snugger fit, so sometimes you still turn it more. My AB was turned by Fedora when he made it, and I again turned it just a bit more. My brim may border on cartoony, but then so do I... ;)
