The Turn: The big question....

Post by Fatdutchman »

Indy's hat(s) throughout Raiders all display "The Turn" (with the exception of the gray hat). I suppose it's neat and all, but the question that comes to my mind is "why?" Why did they do it to begin with? It's something that obviously was done on purpose, since all the brown hats are turned.

Wow, I can't even begin to search on this one, but to recap the stuff I've read here over the last two years in one nut...

1) it's was a common practice (back when wearing hats was itself a common practice) for snugging up a slightly loose hat

2) it was conjectured that Ford's hats were a bit on the loosey side, possibly blocked in a round or round-oval shape, whereas anecdotal information indicated his head might be more of a long-oval, which might be why it needed snuggin'

3) Fedora's thread about making a hat for Ford revealed some information from someone closer to the production to the effect that Ford allegedly has a somewhat not uncommon flat area on the back of his head, basically just on one side. several other COW members piped up w/ 'me too!', and apparently this would also be a reason why it needed snuggin'

I think that's about it. what'd I forget, folks?

the turn

...because some genius noticed, it looks so #### fine! ;) I wouldn't look for any other reason.
I was surprised seeing this advice for the first time and treated this as "made up sensation". It took some time for me to try... This is a whole different story and a whole different fedora, my friends. Now, I can't imagine how could I wear it without the turn...

Cool photo!

Yes, I can imagine that they wanted to give Indy's hat a little character. Lots of folks used to wear their hats a bit crooked or cocked so perhaps they played around - liked the brim effect and decided to reposition the front pinch. Seems plausible.

Personally, I believe it was either an accident the with the first hat or as has been mentioned above - it was done on purpose to give the hat a lived in look. Then, because they had a great costumer, the rest of the hats used were styled after that first fedora to keep the look consistant.

IMO, I think that hat was turned so that it didn't look like any other dress fedora. I think its been mentioned here before but not sure by whom: Any Indy fedora without the turn is just another fedora. I also think that sizing issues were a problem.

And a bit off-topic - regarding "the spirit" you are talking about, mark seven. Here is the answer for a question, why you MUST have your Indy gloves in Kenya... :)
