AB Rabbit

Ok, for those of us lucky enough to get one of the last few rabbit ABs what style do you plan to go with...or do you plan to bash it yourself?

I think I'm going to go for the SOC look. I really like the way spiridon's AB looks (from the post your AB here thread) and would like mine to be similar.

Tone, did you get two like you suggested?

After seeing the light (and by light I mean JWeaver's AB) I decided on a Raven Bar bash.

steve's gonna hate me. i've asked for an ultimate SOC bash. i speced out:

- an extra 1/4" on the crown so that i can have extra material for the mushrooming effect. i hope that he'll take the ruler to the crown and 'bulb' and 'bow' it for me
- i've asked for a flatter brim on the backside for the true SOC look (less turn-up on the brim at the back of the hat)
- a smaller size so that it sits higher on my head
- a cinched ribbon to clamp down the bulbed crown complete with the pleat on the right side bash
- the allmighty droopy front brim over the right eye (standard on the SOC)
- and finally, for the hat master to scrunch it up in a ball and sit on it before UPS gets their boot heels on it

sounds a bit much. i offered to pay extra if he could accomodate this....because i figure i only had one crack at this. but if time limitations and steve's workload can only produce the standard SOC with the taller crown, i wouldn't send it back nonetheless.

cheers!

Gonesolo - can you direct me to a pic of "the light?"

Indiana G - Those are some specs...and I thought I was putting a lot of thought into the hat!

Tone - I figured you were kidding...but I thought humm, why not? I can get two hats for less than what I planned on paying for an AB and I could go for two different looks.

I thought I could control the gear addiction, but it's a lot more difficult than I thought. What was my credit card limit again? :D

Indiana G - if that madness can work into an AB that looks as good as Tone's then it will all be worth it!

tone,

i saw $3M's treatment with the dirt and i don't think i'll end up doing that or even with the fuller's earth....i'll save that hat for some jamaican sand in 2007 and perhaps some peruvian dust (no not that kind) in the future (if the misses isn't expecting by then :D )

i'm gonna leave the whole pleat/size thing to fedora....if he can or can't, if he wants to or not. he's a #### of a guy and i'll respect whatever he produces.

i think IK is referring to the akubra that you posted way back when.....the one you bleached, had sitting in a car for 3 months, etc...that was you right tone?

i remember the picture. someone commented that it was the best SOC bash in the forum and i totally agreed. if i get my hat to look half as good as that its gonna go in an environmentally controlled, laser gaurded, display case for me and only me to admire.....next to the monet and the lost ark of the covenant.

I completely agree with Mr. Tone. You will need to put a lot of work into that hat. Also, it will never look its best when it is new. At least we won't have a problem with the ABs.

I really like the well of the souls bash, but there aren't a lot of great pics for it. Maybe I'll just go with the Disney bash.

I'm going to ask for the WoS bash though, and with a brim that's not so wide. I really don't do wide brims. So far I'm thinking I'm not going to have it turned though... unless I really should. I think it looks kinda funky. I think I'll ask for a brim kind of like the end of LC. Can we get a Templars bash?

:-k Is that a good or bad idea?

I put on my Disney fed yesterday and gasped in horror. What were we ever thinking?
The WOS bash is similar to the Raven bash. I think you could pull off a similar look by comparing the two.

No suprise I picked the SoC bash for my rabbit AB as well. Although, I didn't give any detailed instructions to Fedora on how to bash it. I figured he's done plenty of those and knows the look I'm referring to. :)

Yep, I figured that too when I ordered my AB rabbit with a Raven Bar bash. I have total confidence in Steve's craftsmanship.

Well hey, I have confidence in his craftsmanship too... just not in what I want. I don't want a hat (brim) that's going to look big on me.

I'm still excited though about getting the hat. I'm sure it'll be awesome no matter what. And if anything, I can just cut the brim down a teency bit.

IndyMcfly - I am right there with you! I know my AB will be great, I just hope I can choose the style that will make me happy...which was the point in this thread, I was hoping to get some help, but it just made the decision harder by putting more ideas in my head! I didn't think about the raven bar scene, that one looks great!...but I'll probably go with SOC :D

I picked Well of the Souls partly because Raven and SOC are the 2 most popular and common ones.... I wanted to be a little different. :D 8) This way when people ask me what bash I got, I can say, "Well of the Souls!" and they'll go, "Ohh, that's different" ...even though it may not be too different.

Oh, sorry if I was unclear in my post... see, I also jumped on the Bunny Bandwagon when Steve announced he had rabbit bodies left... got the last one, at that. You're likely to receive yours before mine... :)

Shane - not bashing (now there's an unintended pun if I ever saw one) anyone for styling their own hats! I have an open crown HJ coming my way too... thing is, I went for the full service because personally, I want "the complete product" - Steve making the hat and giving it his trademark, not only in the craftsmanship, but also in the styling. I like the idea. :)

Yeah - that's why I requested the Well of the Souls bash - I just wasn't sure what I wanted before I ordered and I mixed it up a little and asked for this bash. I'm just worried about how the brim will look on me. My Akubra's brim is 6.5cm in front and 5.5 cm on the sides. If you see my pic in the Halloween thread, I think the hat looks fine on me (maybe even good?) but that hat is a size 55 and my AB will be a 56 (yeah the Akubra's gettin' tight.)

To respond a bit late :D ...I saw Weaver's and Dutch Jones' hats and they both look great...the more hats I see, the more of a debate I have!

I actually thought about getting two since it is such a great deal, but funds are low (after buying a wested)...I have plenty of room for an AB beaver, just not enough $$ now, but soon :D

Hey Tone, how do you get the center dent in your Akubras to be so deep? I try that on my Akubra, and I can't get the dent very deep before my head starts pushing it back up. Maybe it has to do with what size you are. What size are you? Since the general consensus around here is that the larger the hat, the straighter the sides, I figure maybe that also makes it a bit taller, and thus, you're able to get the deeper dent into it.

my 59 Akubra is SLIGHTLY tapered (it's one size too big for me)...maybe, hard to really tell... My two 58's have a MUCH nicer shape, and in fact, have a cool "bulb" form. The 59 has a deep crease, and almost touches my head (after wearing the hat half a day, the hat sinks down on my head, and the center crease DOES touch my head). My brown 58 has a fairly deep center crease, but not quite as deep as the 59. My gray 58 is different entirely. It does not have nearly as much material on top, and the crease is rather shallow. Same hats, same size, presumably the same block, yet quite different as to the amount of material at the top of the crown and the crease that it allows.

Indiana_Tone wrote: Strider, 57. The center dent is deeper because I'm trading off straighter sides for a more accurate top dent. It does leave a dent on my hair when it's longer but it doesn't push it out. The only thing I can think of is that maybe your hat is looser than it could be and is able to slide lower on the forehead. Maybe a 1/2 size smaller will keep the hat snug enough on the brow to stay on without letting too much of the dent hit the top of your head to push it out again?
That very well could be what's going on. I tend to wear my hats low on my head so that they don't blow off with a gust of wind (whether normal or from the occasional semi blowing past me at 30 mph). I put them on and tug them down, like Indy does when they are digging their way into the well of the souls. Right now, I have a bit of that foam that comes with the hat tucked in the back of the sweatband, so it's very possible.

By the by, how low/high is one supposed to wear their hat? As in, how much room should there be between the top of your ear and the underside of the brim?

good question strider. coming from the world of cowboy hats, my answer is....wherever its comfortable for the wearer :)

my HJ and AB both sit pretty low. i've ordered the bunny AB and the fed with a smaller size so that it sits higher up on me and then i can fully take advantage of the tall crown.

it'll be just as snug regardless....just higher on the head.

cheers!
