Anyone know anything about this picture?
Someone posted this picture (bottom of post) titled "Raiders16-vi", and I wonder if anyone has any details about it?. The hat isn't turned, and Ford's hair looks darker than in Raiders. My guess it was taken preproduction? He even looks young. I'm interested because the felt looks like a regular Fed's dark greenish brown, maybe?. The brim looks thick like a Fed's. ... I'm trying to determine if the Raiders hat was a Federation, or something close, or not.. ... because I think it's possibly and Akubra. It's been said it was somekind of "Australian Model". ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, My Fed size 59 made a great Raiders hat. But it's 3 sizes too big. I think I can make a 58 work as well or better, so I just ordered it. ...wouldn't it be great if the Raiders hat WAS a Regular Federation? ? I looked at the Movie stunts and Making of Raiders VHS, because I remember seeing green hats in it. Here are a few. Could be a very brown hat that only looks green, because photography tweaked it. Obviously the hat wasn't this green. ....................................................... Excuse the porkpie, it was only in it for 24 hours)...Here's my Federatin somewher between looking green or brown

That pic looks weird..something about it just isn't right,if you showed just a pic of the hat on its own I'd say it was definately a regular fed but it isn't the film hat-and Harrison looks too young here for Raiders IMO,maybe this was whipped up by someone on photoshop?

It looks like one of those pre-production shots, like the ones they use to see how the actors look in the costumes. There are a bunch like that of the StarWars actors, where they look alot different than in the film. Harrison Ford with really short hair as Han Solo, Mark Hamill with longer hair as Luke, etc.

I've seen that shot many times - usually not quite so cropped so that you can see most of the hat. I'm sure it was taken at the same time as the picture on this Wested page

The first pic has the sweat stain on the ribbon-so that's a film hat. The second picture is one I have seen before, in fact the crease job used to be my favorite and it is turned, although the crease in this pic is a bit off center. But the brim is still warped. I don't know about the third pic. Now, the 4th pic is strange, in that you do not see the normally well defined flying v on the bow, and the ribbon even seems to be a different material than the Raiders fedora.
At one time HJ not only carried their own brand, but they also carried Stetsons. I know, because I have a Stetson Imperial from the HJ shop that I got off of ebay a few years ago. I sent the first AB freebie to the QM Summit in it, requested to have it back, but never got it!!! It was a vintage shipping box, as tough as a rhino. My point is, if they sold Stetsons, then it is possible they also sold Akubras. And Akubra once had the licensing to make Stetsons. Perhaps the reference to "the Australian model" was actually a reference to Akubra? I think this is a valid point here, but we perhaps will never know, unless Swales becomes rather chatty with us. Someone needs to take the guy to lunch, buy him a few drinks and interogate him like a Nazi. Fedora

I think you're dead on on that one Whiskyman. And I think that's a preproduction shot, so the hat may not have been nailed down at that point.whiskyman wrote:I've seen that shot many times - usually not quite so cropped so that you can see most of the hat. You can really make any judgement on color with 20-25 year old VHS tape. I wouldn't really call that porkpie green either, but it's certainly the distinct Fed color. Besides green, I can see blue and red splotches all over the image as well. The 3rd one definitly has some greenish tint, but again, it's just the source material and lighting IMO.

I don't think it's exactly the same shot, his eyes are looking away in this shot, directly at the camera in the Wested shot. However, they may be from the same photoshoot, can't really tell, the background "looks" similar. If it is from the same shoot wouldn't it be nice to get hold of the other shots on the same roll of film?IndyDoc wrote:I think you're dead on on that one Whiskyman. I agree that the 4th pic looks very Akubra-ish. As for the film hat (or at least the hat in the 4th pic) being an Akubra Federation, I don't that could be...isn't the Federation a relatively newer model from Akubra? Made to celebrate Australia's Federation, or something?
That doesn't mean the hat in that pic is not an Akubra, though. Wasn't the Federation based on a modified version of some other Akubra (the Drover or Squatter or Campdraft or Backdraft or something...)? I, too, remember hearing Nadoolman say the Raiders hat was the "Australian model" in the Raiders bonus DVD. And I also remember hearing somewhere from another source, that the Raiders hat was at least based on some old Akubra, although I forget the source on this.
I would also love to see the whole pic of the 4th pic.
