First Whips and Whip Adventures!

Post by Havana Joe »

Hello,

I’m new to this forum and am curious about our first whip and what adventures we’ve had with our whips.

My first whip:
When I was in fourth grade (Catholic School in New York) my parents took me to a Spanish Rodeo at Madison Square Garden. On the way out through the passages I heard what sounded like gunshots. Being a big fan of firearms even before this age, I rushed towards the sounds with my parents behind me and arrived to find an old man cracking a leather whip and with a bunch of coiled up whips around his other arm. I fell in love (with the whips! :-({|= ).

My parents bought me one of the whips (not too pc today aye!) and I spent many hours learning to use it, with many painful hits to the mouth and one to the eye that reminded me of what goggles are for. I nailed myself so hard across the lips once that I had a welt for days!!!

My first whip adventure.
It wasn’t long after I learned to use my new whip that the first opportunity to use it came along. I was still in the fourth grade.

There was this kid, can’t remember his name but he was a real jerk, always bugging people, taking things, etc. One day my father and mother came to pick me up in their huge four-door Buick with my cousin Ana sitting in the back seat, passenger side. I got in behind my dad and, hearing my cousin scream, saw that kid take her Barbie doll through the open window and run off with it. My cousin screamed and I looked down at my whip coiled neatly under my dad’s seat.

I reached for the whip and was out of the door, chasing the kid. I can remember hearing my dad yelling at me to stop. I didn’t. In a few moments I was a few feet behind him and that’s when I did it: I let the whip drop back and snapped it forward. I wasn’t good enough to do this on purpose, but it turned out looking like I was an expert. The whip popped and coiled around the kid’s neck as I stopped, jerking him to a stop. I was shocked but didn’t show it. He dropped the doll and pulled the whip from around his neck, crying. I coiled the whip back up, picked up the doll, and walked back, feeling like a hero. My dad scolded me a little, and I found out years later that he actually thought it was a neat event. The kid never bothered me again. My cousin and I still remember that day sometimes.

Back then my inspiration for using a whip became Zorro. When I saw Raiders of the Lost Ark I just went nuts!

nice story havana. that a scene straight out of TOD.

if that happened today, the kid would get more than just a scolding from the parents......the event would probably get covered by CNN.

cheers!

Thanks!

Yeah, no kidding! They'd put me in some counseling or anger managment program. If they'd find a drawing of a gun in my books I'd be done for sure!!!

It really was a nutty thing to do, but I was a kid. Thank God I didn't actually hit him with the whip and it just wrapped around his neck!

You know, a friend of mine and I who used to eb in a cowboy show played a trick on a guest at his house. I cracked the whip and wrapped it around his legs. He acted like it hit him and that he was ticked off, then went inside. He returned with a short side by side shotgun we used for he show, with these really loud blanks, and let me have it. I fell and everything for effect. The guest literally turned white. He laughed after and said he didn't know what to do next. It was a funny thing to experience.

Joe, Welcome to Indy Gear and Club Obi-Wan. that was a great story!

I was always a good kid and well behaved, I never whipped any one or ever got in any kind of trouble, honest and that’s all I’ll say about that!

Funny story! It has made my day

Not only would it be covered by CNN nowadays but the kid'sparents would most likely cry 'lawsuit' which is sad. Bullies really need to be taught a lesson and how better than a good 'whipping'! lol

Great story, Havana. When I started out whipping I only ever seemed to get in trouble always whipping the wrong things

Lately I've been having fun doing whip demos during a local Wednesday night open mic. The bar has high ceilings and an open area for dancing, so I've had no problem doing some targeting and some two-handed routines. At the first open mic I did some guy came up to the stage with a cigarette in his mouth and asked me to cut it in half. It took me a few tries, but I got it. 8) The lighting wasn't the greatest and all I could see was the cherry on the end of the cigarette.

I came up with a new trick to perform at the open mic night. I put an empty dixie cup on top of my head, knock it off my head with the overhead crack, and as the cup goes flying through the air in front of me I hit the cup a second time with a side-arm crack.

For two-handed routines I started doing a version of Mike Murphy's gunslinger, in what I think is offset-staggered time. The rhythm I get sounds very 3/4-ish, so I'm thinking of calling it the Tasmanian Waltz, that is if it doesn't already have a name.

I guess these aren't really whip adventures, though maybe every time you take out a bullwhip in a bar it's going to be an adventure of some sort.

Glad I made you smile!

Yes, cracking a whip in a club is an adventure!

I need to get myself a new whip to have more adventures: right now I just have a nylon one. It works nice but there's nothing like a well made, well ballanced leather whip!

I have one but not as nearly good as the last. It was Halloween and I was in my Indy costume. A few friends of mine had various costumes as well. I was 15 and the oldest with us was 17 we went trick or treating for our last time.

During our time out we bumped into these grade school kids crying their eyes out. Come to find out some kids had literally ripped their candy from their hands as the only thing they had to show for it were those orange pumpkins with broken handles. We got a description and decided to make that our mission. Well, we found them. They were Junior High kids with pillow cases packed to the hilt with candy. As we started walking up to them I removed my whip from the hip and cracked it. Well, the loud crack certainly got their attention and with a stern voice as I was being very Indyesque I told them to put the sacks down and walk away or we were going to have a problem. Soon after I said that my friends girlfriend notched her bow as she was dressed as a Huntress. My friend removed his machete as he was dressed as a military man and my other friend pulled out his matching hatchets in his mountain man outfit. They did as they were told and ran the other direction.
We found the little kids filled their buckets to the top and sent them home. We kept the rest for ourselves. It's one of my fondest memories as things like that can't happen anymore for fear of lawsuits and imprisonment. My best friend and I recall that story and he reminds me how much I really am like the character and we both chuckle.

Nice agitating story, I have right now pictures in my brain
Indiana G, you´re right, if that happens today, the parents of the child would...
I think you´re story would have been a nice alternative to the first part in the Last Crusade :D
