Introduction/Comment

Post by xfootdoc »

I was just notified that my account has been activated and I may now participate. My name is Alan Zeichner and I live in Novato, Calif. While I am not an Indy gear collector I do love the art of whip cracking and whip making(I'd love to learn how). My only connection to the Indiana Jones, is the fact that my daughter and George Lucas's daughter were in the same class in high school and I met him at open school night.
I wish I had learned about this forum earlier as I have learned quite a bit just from reading the 21or so pages of previous posts. I bought my first whip, a Rhett Kelly 8' Indy style nylon bull whip in April and my latest a 6' Roo bull whip from Adam Winrich. Both were beautifully made. Had I know of this forum before I would have been able to speak to both whip makers more intellegently. However the fact that I chose them to make my first whips was pretty lucky.
I hope that I can meet some others in the SF bay area so I can improve my cracking and I can see more whips. I haven't had much luck finding people to practice with. I know there is a group in SF that meets on Sundays. I'm on their email list but have received only one notice of a practice since April.
Now for the comment. I am very impressed with this forum. The whip makers are quite open with their offers to help and even refer buyers to other makers as the occasion dictates. I love the constructive advice given and the tone in which it is given.
I hope to contribute and I know I will have many questions.......Alan

Alan, Welcome to Indy Gear and Club Obi-Wan. It’s good to have you here and thanks for your kind comments on the group. We are pretty lucky to have a wide range of members from the professional whip artists and whip makers to the die hard Indy fans to the novice whip crackers just starting out, we try to keep this room open to whips and whip cracking in general so that its not just exclusively focused on the Indy style bullwhip. Other bullwhips, stockwhips and snakewhips are fair game.

As for the San Francesco bay area situation, there was a regular weekly workshop on whip cracking at the San Francisco Circus Center from 6 to 7pm on Sundays. That’s probably the one your talking about. There was like 4 or 5 dollars entry fee per session for floor dues and anyone could just show up. I haven’t heard much about it since Andrew Conway, moved out of the area. He used to kind of run it and I don’t think its been the same since he left. You might want to look them up and give them a call to see if they are still doing it.

Anyway, There is a wealth of knowledge here and in the achieved posts, so enjoy yourself and feel free to jump into a conversation or ask questions. Rhett and Adam are both make fantastic whips, so if you get a chance feel free to post some pictures, we like seeing whip pics lol! All the best.
