Canyon’s gear theory #2:Could the ‘turn’ also be caused by..

Post by Canyon »

...the bash on the top of the fedora?

I have read several threads about the ‘turn’ and have read 3thoubucks fedora tutorial several times now. Soon after I got my Adventurebilt, it started almost ‘moulding’ itself into the bash during the scene in Raiders where the truck blows up. I believe it was someone here on COW who mentioned that during this scene, Indy can be seen putting his hands on his fedora and almost pushing it down.

I posted this last month so you guys could take a look at my AB bash.

I realise that this theory may have already been thought of, but I thought I would post it anyway

I'm not sure I follow what you're saying, Canyon :? Probably my fault, I can be as dense as PB felt

Yes, Indy's hat is sometimes placed crooked on his head, with the pinch not quite lined up with his nose. This would make the turn more dramatic, but I don't think it would cause it. The whole idea of the "turn" is to make a dimensionally cut brim to rotate off center, which makes it look slightly wider on one side and gives it that crooked swoop. Generally you do that with an open crown hat, then lay all the bashes in on their intended center axis.

Who me, or Shawnkara?

Sorry, perhaps I didn't explain it very well. I know that I am probably out of my league here a bit, but basically what I'm trying to say is, as well as the usual ways of turning a hat, is this another way of doing so?

I posted this because I wasn't 100% sure if this theory had been mentioned before or not. I know it's pretty obvious that if you bash a fedora a certain way, it's going to affect the general look of the hat, but I'm just trying to share my ideas as and when I think of them.

Canyon, I'm not clear about what you are saying. The turn is acheaved by putting on the hat ( open crown ) and turn the hat on your head, then putting in the bash.
I know that you must be talking about something else but i just don't understand what that might be.

You should always share your idea's when you get them. Thats my understanding of what COW is.

Yeah, and next time, maybe I won't end up confusing the heck out of everyone.

I know the idea of the turn, but what I'm getting at is by giving my fedora a 'zig-zagged' bash, it has given the hat a 'turned' look. *sigh* I hope that this is making sense.

I think I undersand what you are saying now. The turn doesn't show up unless the hat is on your head. I don't think a little crease on the top of the hat is going to change the brim but, the turn will change both the brim and the way the crown will look.
