Hello everyone, new member here and just wanted to intro myself, and thank all of the cow members for all the hard work and research you put in. I have browesed these pages for a couple years now, ever since I needed to replace my close enough indy jacket. Now I finally have a service with e-mail that allows me to join. I stumbled across this site by accident while online looking for an indy leather. Now 3 years later I'm still on it multiple x a week and maybe now I can share some thoughts, ideas, and opinions with all you.
I know, I know, enough already, lets get to the indy gear. After hours of reading everyones posts I went with wested, lamb, authentic brown, origanaly was not convinced of square slidders, but was a few monthes ago with new posts and pics, those are now changed. Distressed my jacket with sandpaper and acetone, the last few monthes I felt some of was a little to much, so last I hit it with pecards with brown tint, it looks smoking now.I was not aware the 80's fit @ that time. my jacket is a little over two years now, and now that I have caught the indy bug I have purchesed more indy gear and still working on more .
I will try to post pics once I figure out how. I will discuss my other gear on the appropriate forum. Thank you all for your diligence and hard work to find the ultimate indy gear. cj

Indy's first words and they should be mine as well. i just got my account activated and i also was looking how to say hello but it seems EMT beat me to the punch.
i too have been harvesting information from COW to ensure that i am well prepared to throw out my hard earned money! i want to thank each and everyone of you guys and gals for helping me in the past with all the collecting i've been doing. Bernardo, Todd, Fedora, Peter/Gemma at Wested, Indy Magnoli are just a few of the amazing people i have had the pleasure of doing business with in the past and it indeed makes this hobby extremely enjoyable.
since i am in the leather jacket section, i should post something pretaining to the subject. i had an a-typical wested raiders jacket that i received in the summer and ended up distressing it (sorry michealson). though it looks really good, i ended up longing for the shine it had when it was new. after some more research on COW i ordered a new one which will remain untouched by sandpaper, alcohol, or acetone. here's the specs:
- raiders jacket in dark brown goat
- 80's cut with tappered sleeves....extra 1.5" in the sleeve to get a nice rippling effect (cross your fingers)
- sliders, x-box stitching, request to have straps pointed towards the middle of the coat instead of towards the arms
- silver zipper if possible
- 2 pc gussets
- satin lining throughout
i will try to get some pics when it is received. its great to be here with all of you!

i already have the authentic lambskin so opted for something different. in another post, i believe it was Michealson who said that wested's goatskin now is closest to how the wested's lambskin was back in making ROTLA. thats why i went for it. i went for the dark brown instead of the authentic brown as i liked the way the jacket looked in the peru temple scene and the raven bar scene....very dark...probably because of the lighting in the scenes, but thats okay.
also, i heard that goatskin was a stronger hide than lamb and would be a little warmer for the upcoming winter. regardless, i will have a nice shiney wested for those dressier days and my old beater wested for when i'm trying to outrun 22 foot boulders

Not necessarily thicker. We're talking about tensile strength between hides and animals. Thickness and weight does not determine strength of a leather. Goatskin is much more flexible than cowhide, and in many cases, a LOT thinner in thickness. In tear tests, it far surpasses cowhide in it's ability to resist rips and tears in hard use, and due to the tight pores of the hide, makes it naturally water resistant. That's why the U. S. Navy switched to goat during WW2.
The STRONGEST of the group is, believe it or not, kangaroo....and it's as light if not lighter than lambskin. I just didn't mention it as it's consider an exotic leather in many places, and not included in the general population of hide choices.
That's another reason why 'roo hide is the choice of those knowledgeable in the craft of whip making, as it's strength blows cowhide away in comparison. Light, flexible, AND strong. The reason it's not used that much in jacket making is the difficulty in obtaining hides in the first place, let alone the SIZE of hide required to MAKE said jacket....and the color is difficult to hide in the tanning and dye process when a large surface area is to be seen. Most I've seen and handled have all had a reddish tint that shows through, no matter what color the hide is dyed to be.
