The Man with the hat is back, and this time he's wearing ...
a Stetson???????? Wouldn't an HJ be more accurate. Even though I'm sure we've all seen the ad for Stetson. My question is , wouldnt this be false advertising since Herbert Johnson made the hats for "Last Crusade". Even if Stetson bought the rights....the fact remains that Indy was NOT wearing a Stetson in the film, or at least , not the majority of the time anyway (I guess someone will say they threw one in the film someplace, like Temple of Doom)...and , the hat in the ad itself is most likely , NOT a Stetson either... I know, I bought a brand new $80.00 one after seeing the Ad in a 1989 June issue of Premiere, which I still own. ( the hat and the issue of Premiere). I also remember being really upset when I got the hat that it did not look like the one on Indy's head in the ad. Then, several months later when the HJ showed up, so did a big smile on my face.
I work in advertising .... and I really think this is one of the best bait in switches I have seen. Especially for the GEARHEAD who didn't know that GEARHEADS existed back then.

Sorry, just thought everyone here would know the ad I was talking about. I will have to scan my ad I guess so I can post it. It was a really popular ad at the time. ( was a print ad for magazines, and the photo was the same one used for the Drew Struzan art for the Last Crusade Teaser poster.) So, in the photo of Harrison, Stetson is claiming that the hat he wears is a Stetson....which, I don't think it is. I wanted all the experts here to chim in on the ad, if they know the one I mean. Will try to post it.

I bought a Stetson hat years ago. It never looked quite right to me and figured it was just me. I even recall in Starlog magazine with the knowall get all of Indy's gear. I looked literally for years for a mussette bag later to find out it wasn't a swiss bag at all. I may still have this magazine. I think it did mention him wearing a stetson as well.
Thanks to COW my quest for Indy gear is coming closer and closer to a reality. It'll never end I'm sure but the look I've been trying years to achive is getting there.

And "coincidentally" ToD had some of the worst hats of the series.there where Stetson hats used in TOD
When you think about it, it's clever advertising, because they never actually say that they made the hat for the series. They just say "The Indiana Jones Hat. Stetson." It's cheap, it's dirty, but it's darn clever. :junior: -IJ
I worked in a store that sold Stetson hats back around 95. I didn't like how the Stetson hats looked. To me they were not close enough. I even had a customer come in with his Wool DP and I didn't like the looks of it either. So my quest eventually led me here and now I have my Akubra Fed. I’m glad I held off all those years. The Fed is a wonderful hat.

To retell the tale... Paramount and Stetson signed a deal to sell Stetson 'Temple of Doom' fedoras in the lobbies of the theaters when TofD came out. This poster was the marketing 'hook', as it was planned that after folks saw the movie, they had the chance to buy a Stetson as they walked of the theater.
The hats were made, and delivered to Paramount to distribute to selected theaters when the film was sent out. In mid stream, Lucas pulled his support from all TofD merchandise, as they had flooded the market with items, and they just weren't selling like he thought. Case in point, of the 5 TofD action figures, only 3 were put in stores, then the other two never released.
Paramount scrapped the idea...then sold the Stetson's to outlet stores to sell, such as U. S. Cavalry in Kentucky.
I was fortunate to obtain one directly from the Paramount prop storage department in 1986. The quality felt is quite nice...NOTHING like the standard Stetson TofD fur felts. The cloth sweat band has the Stetson crest. NONE of the production Stetsons came out with this band. If you ever find with with the crest, it's one from that planned sale by Paramount/Stetson.
Anyway, that's the story behind the poster and the marketing strategy.

What Fedora said....that is the ad I was talking about. I will try at some point to scan and post. It is not the ad that INDY BLUES posted...although the photo is the same. Does anyone here believe that the photo that INDY BLUES posted is Harrison wearing a Stetson....no Stetson I've seen ever looked that good. I think even if you have the licensing rights, you are obligated to not false advertise. The photo should be Harrison wearing an actual Stetson hat. I bet in Last Crusade the only Stetson hat is the one that gets thrown into the shot after Indy loses his hat fighting on top of the tank. He never even wears that hat...but it was in the movie.

Mine and about 90% of the board. Granted, ToD had SOME nice hats (the bridge scene hat comes to mind), but they also had SOME of the worst in the series. Ever taken a look at the one he's wearing on the Ford Trimotor plane? Absolutely horrible. Easily worse than ANY of the hats in either Raiders or Crusade. :junior: -IJthat is just you opinion , There's something about the tod I like i cannot quite put my finger on it

hat
thank you.Part of the reason the trimotor hat looks so bad is that Willie screwed it up when she went to wake Indy. He takes it from her, and puts it on his head without fixing it......(at least when the two of them realize no one is flying the plane)
I still have my ad from the cd. It was like a dream come true being able to buy an Indiana Jones jacket for the first time. I didn’t subscribe to Lucasfilm magazine and didn’t know that there were other options (Lee Keppler). I don’t know if leather concessionaires had ads out in the magazine or not. I ended up buying mine from the “US Cavalry” catalogue.Minnesota Jones wrote:This ad below came from the cassette version of the LC soundtrack in 1989...
Since it was 1989, I'm 95% sure the fedoras are the Stetsons and not the Dorfmans yet. The jackets are the old Cooper (now USWings). Not sure who made the Prof. Henry Jones Sr. hat in the ad thou...
