Abner's hat.........times 2

Here my my first ever Abner hat, or Fedora's hat if you go by the credits at the end of the film. This one is a long oval, and now I am curious as to how a regular oval one would look. Pardon the messy background, but this was after I made a couple of hats and have not cleaned up.

Looks right to me...although I think the ribbon looks a tad too thin. I know Fedora's hat in LC had a thinner ribbon, but I thought it was wider than that. I've noticed that having such a thin ribbon tends to make the crown look REALLY tall. interesting.

And his name's not Abner, its Forrestal.

I like it, it looks like I might need one of them hats you have there. Hmm, I could have sworn there was a little bit of a pinch in the front... Nice hat non the less, you are the Fedora master. No pun intended!

And don't mind the messey background, it looks like a real work place that way! Only when people hats start getting lost in the pile should you take any concern.

YeaH, hard to figure out how wide his ribbon is. I used an inch ribbon, as his sure looked quite a bit narrower than the 1 1/2 used on Indy's fedora. The hat pictured here is not as tall as it appears. Photos lie, and they lie often.

Yes, in some scenes there seems to be just the slightest dents on the front, and in others, I can't see them. I think I would put some shallow ones in, as I like them. Fedora

Perhaps a ribbon at 1-1/4 inch?

It also tapers slightly in the screenshot with the slight pinch.

This is a nice style also and might work well as an alternative to the Raiders pinch - not everybody suits every style. I am not sure I would suit this style of hat as much as the Raiders pinch but I have always admired the look in the movie. Its Indy whilst not quite being Indy.

Mark you HAVE to take some pictures of yourself in it when you get it. I think it'll look good on you plus you are certainly a rather Abner-esque individual yourself (although I know we both prefer Forrestal!)

Now, if I can get Peter to either find those patterns on the jacket, or accept a commission to create one for me, I'll be a VERY happy camper.

Keep us upated on that quest. Then, I can justify buying another leather jacket. Horsehide would be great on a jacket like that, as it already reminds me of my grandpap's horsehide work jacket that I grew up seeing. Very similiar. Fedora

Nope, not yet. TR and I have been beating on his door for the past year or two, and Peter told me a month ago he was going to see if he could find the patterns. Then again, he told TR the same thing a while back....so I'm thinking I may have to go another route to get this on the table as a viable project for him. That's why I mentioned as a private commission, as his site states they'll work with anyone who has an interest in the creation of something different. Well, let's see!

I mean, look, there's interest in having this made by more than just me, so there are potential sales involved for Wested....

If I CAN get him moving on this, I'll post something in the jacket section. I really want this one made and one offered to folks here should something 'different' be wanted besides the standard Indy jackets..

Abner's hat has a thick felt, and it looks to me to have a dimensional cut. I find that interesting. Also, I just happen to have a western body on hand, thick felt and I now know what my next hat will be!! If I can get the jacket one day, I will be set.

Oh, I did that already! After watching the dvd a few times in slo mo, the hat looked to have a slight dimensional cut to it. The rough edge and gentler curve on the side from the above pic, verified(at least to me) that this hat needed it.

Ok, I now have one as well. Now, I just need the jacket!!!

Here is the one I made for myself. I used a thick western body, 50/50 blend, beaver and hare, and she is thick, and stiff. I used a regular oval block, and this block shape(a number 2 block) seems to work better for the tapered look. I used a lighter brown ribbon because I liked the way it looked on the hat. The crown like Michaelson's is 5 inches tall on the sides, brim width, 3 by 2 5/8.(I had to trim more off the sides because a tapered hat does not need as much). I did put some little dents in the front as well. I have grown fond of this hat right off the bat and shall wear this one to the hospital to welcome my new grandson in the world in a few minutes. Check it out.

Michaelson, I have this same block shape in your size, but only in the reg oval. So, if you want to go with that once you wear it a few days, you know what to do.

Thanks!! I think I will now wear this one and give the Raiders fedoras a break. The taper issue will never arise in this hat!!!

I wish I would have taken at least half of the factory stiffener out, prior to making it though. Hindsight is always 100 per cent.

But, I am used to it already, and steaming the entire hat thoroughly prior to putting it on conformed it right to my head shape. Very comfortable unlike some other stiff hats I have owned. Ok, time to go, and I will see you guys later. Oh, it is a boy, or so the sonogram said, and a bigun'. 10 to 12 pounds!!!! My daughter slapped my son in law when the doc told her that. We shall see here shortly.

Well, I only have this block shape in 3 sizes, so that will not be an issue. And, I don't plan on buying blocks for the other sizes. I am too busy already.

Well I am sure you can always add the slight pinch yourself. It will probably happen just taking it on and off unless you always use the brim.

Hey, gang! Loving my AB over here. Getting slowly shaped with use.

But check this out - I briefly wore the "Fedora" hat at ILM. It is stiffer than the HJ's and another brand all together. American made as I recall but I cannot remember the name! Sorry. And it fit me perfectly. Didn't see a size in there but I am 7 5/8.

Since that scene was shot in Colorado, I wonder if they picked it up from a local Western hatter? Would make sense, especially considering the thickness of the felt. There are several VERY good hat makers in Colorado and Wyoming.

First of all: Congrats on the grandchild Steve!!! Please forward my best wishes to your daughter and your son in law.

Second: I think the 2nd. Abner hat looks even better than the first! Definately a go with the lighter brown ribbon. Felt wise, I'd say, if you still got a hat from that super thick vintage beaver felt - that's what you sould use to re-create this hat. It's thicker and has the color spot on from the get go.

Also, I asked to have my felt left 'floppy', so there should be little stiffiner in my hat. THIS way it will develop it's OWN look after I've worn it a while.

Like Indy, I'm NOT Abner either....I just liked his hat, and so it will become a 'Michaelson' hat after I've worn it a while.
