You know it's right when....
I wanted to share a funny incident that took place this last Saturday and would love to hear any comparable stories.
Well..living in a Mining town with a massive population of 5000, people get to notice each other. Nothing can happen without alot of people perking up to the simplest change.
This was demonstrated this last Saturday, when I went out with my two cubs, Connor and David (Hannah, my 5 year old squirrel stayed home with mom). What made this day unusual was that in leaving the house, I put on a "Ball Cap". Something I'd become accustomed to while digging my weeping tile and building a porch over the last couple of weeks.
In venturing out, All I can say is, "You'd think I shot the Queen!" because at least 6-8 times plus in 1.5 hours I was castigated for not wearing my Hat. It was sooo funny...At the coffee shop, the regulars all stopped and complained I was slumming, At the grocery store the two young Cashiers said "My ballcap was Just wrong!" and before my sons and I could get back home it seemed, "Every Man and his dog" was saying "Rawwwb" what are you wearing"? So to say...You know it's right when....the natives demand it.
Anyway...is it mere familiarity that makes this happen or is there some innate and subconscious appreciation of Fedoras? Talk amongst yourselves and please share any stories.
Warmest Regards

That happened to me once when going up home for a visit. I had left my fedora in the car, but grabbed a loose ballcap our of the backseat to wear to a friends house as it had started to rain...it belonged the one of the daughters, and kept the rain off my glasses.
My friend opened the door, said hello, and then asked 'why are you wearing that hedious cap? Where's your fedora?"
When I explained the above, he nodded he understood, and said' well, ok, but don't EVER wear that thing again when you come here. You just don't look right without your fedora!"
Uh, ok.
...and I never have....

My experience living near a large city such as Washington D.C. is that it is rare to actually run into someone that you know while you are out. It is also rare for someone to notice what you are wearing and rarer still for them to make a comment, even if it is a compliment. Of course they won't make a bad comment about it, or I will dot their eye.
Just kidding....well, maybe not.
I told the story once on the forum about the 10-13 year old girl that noticed my fedora and realized right away that it was an Indiana Jones fedora. I was shopping at one of those wharehouse stores.
She began to follow me up and down the aisles humming the Raiders March at the top of her lungs. I was getting a little anxious as it seemed that her father, who was oblivious to what his daughter was doing, was going to be pushing his shopping cart up and down every aisle that I was on.
I had an idea. I would head over to the section with the big screen tvs to wait it out. I figured dad was shopping for household items and probably wouldn't be in the market for a big ticket item. Surely, she wouldn't chase me all the way over there. Besides, I love to look at all the electronic stuff.
To my chagrin, as I entered the tv section, the Raiders March began blaring from every tv in the store. They were showing an advertisement for the newly released Indiana Jones boxed set dvd.

That's a great one.
That's a great one Buff . I'm curious if at that moment, anyone else took notice. If others had looked I might have said, "Yah, I'm his lesser known brother eh".
If I'm outed like that, I've always thought the best way is to just go with the flow and not get defensive, as I did one time going through airport security in Winnipeg.
The woman going through my computer, said "Wow, that looks like an Indiana Jones hat"...to which I profoundly responded "Thanks, (not snarkily), I've always liked the style and it makes sense being "A bald man in a bright world". The comment made her smile and made me happy as we talked a bit more about why more men didn't wear Fedoras.
In your case Buff...(as I've met you in person), This hat was made for you and just seems natural.
Warmest Regards

Honestly, I really don't know if anybody else even noticed. But, with the Raiders March blaring everywhere I went, since I was the only one in the store with a fedora on, it did make me a little self conscious.
But, I am an easy goin' fella and I can laugh at myself as good as anyone else, and I am not shy at all, so I probably won't lose too much sleep for someone humming the Raiders March at me. I did find the situation to be very funny. The timing of the advertisement was hard to miss.

Well if any has to wear a baseball cap, I guess you could go over to the Star Wars store, they have a Indiana Jones baseball cap up for sale.
About 5 hats, different color, but really only two styles. I'm thinking of getting the olive colored one.
Heres a link (hope I'm not infringing on any rules about posting anything about baseball caps here)(fingers crossed)

Guys I just heard one that ranks right up there with Buff's. It all started over a year ago when I posted a question about Belloq's pith helmet for my dad. According to my sister, (who I just got off the phone with) earlier today my dad was searching the net looking for pith hemlets. Somehow, he found my post. According to my sister he yells, "Hey come here and look at this! It sounds like this guy is talking about me!" My sister says, "He is talking about you. Look at the screen name. "
