Hello people, I was watching Raiders yesterday and I stopped at the temple scene... what do you think it is that sort of big knot at the end of the fall?

Gio

Hmmm that is odd looking. Maybe it’s the knot holding the popper, or the frayed end flying up closer to the camera lens so that it looks large and blurred.

Depending on what material the popper was made out of, I have had one fray like that.

hmmm i have to wonder that as well...look at it close its not a frayed end on the end of a popper that is directly on the end of the fall, i'm not seeing a length of popper there (unless its lined up with the camera and we are looking at the end?)...also it kinda looks like to me that the fall is swinging out very straight kinda how it would if there was a heavy knot tied at the end instead of curving back from the direction of the movement. maybe i'm just tired.

I think that in the last picture, the "object in question" looks so big because it's actually closer to the camera than the fall stretched behind it in the back. Also, those black nylon poppers that they used in the movies, (especially the fuzzy end,) will reflect as white on film if you use a very directional light on em, (like a 500w fresnel that I betcha they used in this shot if they were using a typical filmstock.)

So I have to agree with many folks here, and say it's the popper with a weird "forced perspective" thing going on.

.....
thanks for the compliments.
I think that the particular shape of the knot at the and of the fall improve the wrapping for the next scene when indy go beyond the ditch.

Gio,

I checked out the scene, and to me it looks like the whiplash knot holding the popper to the fall. If you watch the very beginning of the film when Indy is coming over the hill in silhouette, you can see that there's a very big knot holding the popper on. If you freeze at the right moment, it will be directly under the 'M' in 'Lucasfilm". That has to be what it is...

Those stunt trained tarantulas are much too valuable to risk injury. Sorry, Tone, I couldn't help myself.
