Catchin some grief

Ok, I've been getting some grief from the wife and daughter. I've started using a bag more often. Granted it's not the Indy bag but it is from a British military Pattern 37 web set. They call it my purse

. My only defense is it depends on how it's worn. If the strap is across the chest to the shoulder opposite the side the bag is on, I'm in the clear. Worn on the same side, things come into question. I need more ammo on this one. --tek

), but I wear my Indyish bag almost every day. If you need any historical "ammo" point to the American mountain man of the 1830s: these trappers carried what I call a "side bag" every day with gear inside that could keep them alive for months, and quite often it did. Anybody that claims that a person is any less manly because of a satchel should tell that to John Colter, Hugh Glass, and Zebulon Pike.

You can call it a murse (Man Purse) or your European Carry-all (like on Seinfield). I'd keep it going across the chest though.

I've called it a "possibles bag", which is a black powder shooting term from the days of the mountainmen. I'll stay away from the term "murse" thank you very much. Now where did I put my "Urban Sombrero"?

I suppose if your wife and daughter want to be THAT gender based about carrying a bag, they could always revert to only wearing skirts and dresses.

It's a bag. Whoopdee-do. Carry it over your shoulder, across your chest, around your neck, however you want to wear it. It's a functional bag, and if you use it as such (like I do on a daily basis) then who cares what others think?

Easy there. I'm one of six conservatives here in the state, NRA Life Member who carries, and voted Libertarian against Ted Kennedy last time around. I spark some great arguments at parties around here

. My parents moved here when I was a kid so I really had no say. I'll probably move someday but it's just too tough to uproot with the kids and all.

Here in New York, EVERYONE carries some kind of bag. In fact, I was checking out the bags that men were carrying the other day, to see one that might be a good alternate to my Indy bag.

A "messenger bag" is a good addition to the stable. I just ordered one off eBay that is made by hand from camel skin leather in a little village in India. I haven't gotten it yet, but it sure looks cool. It's slightly bigger than the MK-VII, and that's what I was looking for. Also, it should age nicely.

Well, I have the TAPCO strap on my MKVII, so if anyone calls it a purse, I remind them that it's a military gas mask bag with a rifle strap. About as far from a "purse" (in the girly sense of the word) as it could be. I also call it a "shoulder bag", if anyone really wants to get down to the nitty gritty, since I see lots of men carrying those. I always wear it across my chest.

I have used a messenger bag daily for more than ten years. I have yet to get a purse comment, but I am pretty surly looking.
Also I watched Captain Blood(1935) Errol Flynn carries a bag while on port Royal that would look like a purse if a woman carried. It does not look like a purse when he carries it.

You can also call it a tactical man satchel.

In the UK the government surplus Mark VII bag was used to carry food to work every day by miners and foundry workers (REAL men, y'know?) for decades after WW2. They were called 'snapping bags' (snapping = food). Mine will always be a 'snapping bag' to me.

Don't fret too much Draft, my wife asks me all the time what I carry in my "purse" then laughs it off. The guys at workused to ask me about it, but when they saw I didn't rise to their baiting, they backed off.

I was at the Morongo Basin Historical Society meeting last weekend with my MK VII on, and this sweet little old lady called it my "man purse." I probably shouldn't have punched her, though...
