I have been getting a lot of whipping practice on my month long vacation. Unfortunately, one of my bullwhips is ailing. The big knot where the wrist loop attatches is loose. And, I mean very loose. I can turn it in either direction @ 1/4 of an inch like a knob on a faucet. HELP! Does anybody know a solution to this problem? I do not abuse my whips in any way. This has just come up through regular cracking. It has not been wet or over-conditioned with Pecards. I don't remember reading about this problem here or at the old COW. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

It happened to one of my whips too (a DM), although not as much as you mentioned. I think it was Paul that gave me the advice to apply a LIGHT amount of "crazy" glue underneath the lace to anchor it in. I never had a problem since. And that was about a year ago. If that trick doesn't work then you need a whip maker to redo the whole knot for you. Mark Allen, Joe Strain, Paul, David Morgan would be able to help out. But try the crazy glue trick first.

Glue will work for small problems but I think you should decide on which method you really want to do before using it. Once the crazy glue is applied it will be that much harder for someone to undo the knot and repair it if you decide to do that at a later date. I would do one or the other and not rely on doing possibly both.

It's an easy fix if you'd like me to do it for you. What kind of whip is it? Who made it?

Funny you should ask. I just made one last week out of saddle tan colored roo hide for my pocket watch. It looks really sharp. I'm wearing it this very moment. I used DM's design as a template. I'm thinking that I'll make a different one though just so it is not so similar to what he is selling. I'd be happy to make one for you.

Sending it back to the maker would be an option as well. If they're a reputable maker, they should be willing to do the repair at no charge.

A third option that you might try to accomplish is to tighten it yourself, if you don't want it going through the mail, or don't want to be parted from it. If this is something you're interested in, e-mail me and I'll see if I can't explain it to you.

I'd rather not say at this time. I don't want to hurt any potential business he might have because of my small problem. Let's just say he's one of the well-respected ones on this forum and that he puts out a quality product. When things are resolved, I might report who it is.
