MK VII vs MK VI roominess concerns...

Post by erehwesle »

Allright, I'm new to the forum, hi everyone. For some people it is the fedora, for some the jacket, some are whippies (just made up a word there I imagine); for me it has always been *the bag*

I was thrilled one day on an googling binge to stumble across indygear and find out about the MK VII, and grabbed a WPG repro toot sweet.

I went through the seams on that quickly (maybe I got a bad one), but got a MK VII and a VI from endicotts in their recent offering. I thought I'd try the VI as it is earlier, was supposedly of higher quality, and I'm not so much about screen accurate as useful.

I hate the pockets on the six. No big pocket for my journal or larger books. I'm thinking of cutting the divider out of mine... but I need to know.

The six seems smaller inside than the seven. Is it? Anyone else cut out the divider on a six? How much can you cram in?

I like the VI, but I don't want to modify it, this is a nice vintage one unissued from edicotts, unless I know I'm approaching ideal.

Who knows, I can always stick to my VII and I've just ordered a Margoli strap. Yea!

Nice to meet you all

Todd, a.k.a. erehwesle....

see, I personally have always liked the 6. I used to use it when I worked in an office, cuz it fit my lunch, and other necessities quite well. It has now been religated to Geocache duties. One pocket holds mini-binoculars, compass, multi-tool, and handi-wipes. One pocket is for my journal and maps, and the big pocket in front is for the GPSr, leather gloves, pens and bag o' swag (l'il prizes ya leave behind). My 2 VII's are for Indy costume, so I don't really 'care' about the VI, in so much that I can beat it up and not be concerned. The NH strap has proven quite practical and sturdy in the bush, and the bag itself is a tank.

Don't knock the 6. It could serve you well.

in my point of view the VI has moore room and it's slightly bigger than the VII (as far as I remember). It's just hard to find a VI in VERY good conditions because they are of course older than the VII so they are often at least rusty.
...and hey... the MKVI are ToD accurate!!!

Generally, both of them come in different sizes, so is a small VI the same as a small VII( or medium to medium)? Pretty close. The only difference in the pockets is the configuration, and one of the two compartment pockets on a VI is actually deeper than a VII, as both rear pockets on a VI are the full depth of the bag. On a VII, the left pocket is shallower. Oh, and the VI is missing the small pocket for the dimming cream (or whatever it is called  ). Other than that, they are really close. Two main compartments, 1 large forward compartment, 2 rear compartments, all generally the same size, as they both held generally the same size gas mask.

My 6 is my hero bag, whereas the 7 is simply for costume duty and only because Indy's was a 7. The pockets on the rear of the 6 I find incredibly useful, the main area is slightly bigger than my 7, but the main issue is the fabric. My 6 is a clean nice green which is very soft and flexible canvas. The 7 feels rough and stiff almost like hessian in comparison and the colour is not uniform. I know these are only two individual examples, but it explains my position anyway.

Merrick, this sounds highly intersting, as I am still looking for the "right" bag.

Maybe someone could post some comparison shots of a 6 and 7 side by side (esp. the interior and thos incredible rear pockets?

You got it, Jens. Give me a day or two, I'll get some good ones. I'll have a total of 14 bags once a few arrive that I've ordered, and I'm gonna post pics of all of em.
